That's it, I'm done

I put the water out in the garage. I've patiently cleaned up huge puddles of water all over the kitchen for weeks and just am sick to death of it. Between the two of them, there is always a puddle in the kitchen so it's time for them to drink in an area that someone won't slip and fall on their water mess. The garage is right off of the kitchen so it won't be hard to get them in and out to get water.

my garage is connected to the house I have there water, food and bed there (though they always sleep in my bed)
And also the door to the garden is in the garage.

It is so much less messy than having it in the kitchen since my dogs sometime forget to swallow there water

So do your dogs go in and out of the garage at will or do they stay out in the garage. I'm just curious because there is no way in the world I could leave my garage door open for the dogs. We'd have flies in the summer and in the winter, well, is's well below freezing! We have a dog fountain for the dogs and cats, it circulates the water and they love it! Well, all except for Pete who would still rather drink out of the toilet:doh:

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be able to have them out of the kitchen, but in all reality, I think my 2 year old makes more mess than the dogs! lol

I was just reading this thread and I can sense the frustration... (almost every single post here so far has the  emoticon!!)

Drinking water in the kitchen isn't the problem... it's the abominable snow-poodles coming in from the 6 inches of fresh powdery snow we received last night and having them shake and drip for 30 minutes all over the house!! HAAAA!

It doesn't bother me, I guess... I'm glad they're getting fresh air and exercise! :)

Cash ..if you have a doggy-door on the garage door they could go in and out without insects swarming in ; ).

Kpoo - I hope that it will solve the problem LOL Did you try to put some big towel/mat under the water dish ??? Maybe that way water will not end up "all over" - just a thought  Although I never had multiple dogs in the house so I am of no help here : (

Yeah they took over my kitchen mat and although it catches plenty of water Mia will turn with a mouth full of water and spill out half of it on the kitchen floor on her way out to some where else in the house. The entire house is tiled except the bedrooms so yeah she leaves drops of water all over.

HA! I have my bowls in the kitchen as well as there really isn't any other place to put them. I have taken a few flops on the floor.... LOL I do have rug under the bowls but they walk away dribbling water as they go ~ sigh...

#11 ·
My floor is a mess too......but I dont have young kids either. Maybe a BIG rug will help. OR you could train them to use a napkin afterwards:):):)

#12 ·
Man if I could train them to go up to the counter, get a paper towel and wipe up their mess, I'd be a millionare. I go through a ton of paper towels cleaning up after them so it's just better this way.

Hmmmmm:rolffleyes:

How about those "self-watering" bottles that come with a crate ??? Could you teach them to "lick" water from a bottle like that and not gulp it

Maybe it would be healthier anyway regarding a bloat and stuff ...

This is pretty funny. I had a dog for 13 years that was such a neat freak that he never left a spot of water or food anywhere outside his dish. When I got Hoot 5 years ago I thought his sloppy drinking habits were a puppy thing. But no, he still walks away dripping cupfuls of water! And now I have another large dog that does the same thing. I have almost killed myself a time or two slipping in their mess.

If I hear drinking going on I often will run into the kitchen to wipe their faces. I would love to be able to teach them to lick their own chins. I think that the first dog never actually put his whole face into the bowl but daintily stuck only his tongue into the water. This dog also would also walk around mud and water puddles. Boy I miss him.

This is a problem for us too! We had a rubber mat under the water dish, up until last week when I picked it up and a bunch of little beetles came out of it. GROSS. That's the big issue in Hawaii when you have food and water out...bugs. I guess I'd rather deal with wiping up water all day than having bugs in my kitchen.

Well, here's what I'm going to do. I've decided to teach the word "water" so that I can say let's get "water" and take them out to the garage and let them get water and come right back in. They will drip their water all over the garage and no one will slip. I worry about the kids. My baby has slipped a couple of times.

Teach em to drink out of the commode! LOL. They say the water in there is cleaner than your kitchen counter is anyway. You could train em on one of those hamster like bottles they make for dogs and put a towl under it. I would think twice about putting my water out where the dog didn't have access to it. Restriction for a day or so is one thing, but I wouldn't personally want to have it as way of life.

Agreed. I'd also be worried about them not drinking enough water throughout the day. I guess you could try it for a while and see how it goes. But you know what they say, you can lead a horse (dog?) to water, but you can't make it drink!

You could definitely teach them to drink out of like a guinea pig bottle or something. You might have to refill it all the time though. My friend's shih tzu only drinks out of a hamster bottle. Apparently water can go up their noses if they drink out of a bowl and cause all kinds of problems. I thought it was hilarious the first time I saw her do it, but hey, it works!

Riley dribbles half his mouth full as he walks away too! His water bowl is in the laundry room. I have a large rug under it, and the bowl is on the far corner of the rug in the far corner of the room. There is a runner rug in the laundry room too, so by the time he is out of the room his is done dribbling. Works very well! I think a large rug with the bowl in the back is the key.

They do not need water available all day long. If a person works and crates the dog for most of the day the dog doesn't get water during those times. They need water available to them a few times a day and I have one of those self dispensing things so they get fresh water as it comes out when they drink it. Harry doesn't drink water all day long even when it was available 24/7. There are times when he drinks it and it's often at the end of the day. So if he's offered water 4 to 5 times a day on a regular basis he'll drink it when he wants it. Same with Mia, she came in with a wet face last time they went out for "water" break.

I think having the water in the garage is worth a try. I wouldn't try the bottle. I've had several rabbits, a few guinea pigs and even a hamster. I swear I've had every type of water bottle they make for sm. animals and they all leak! Even the one's that specifically say they won't leak on the packaging. I'm sure Wonder can back me up. I also don't think they would provide enough water for a large dog, they only release a tiny amount at a time.

I have tried every form of drinking bowls for me nothing helps .

It is almost if she forgets to swallow her water.
Charly the male is more neat.

I used to have a Cavalier female and there was no problem with her and the Labrador well he died so young that I can hardly remember so if he did it did not bother me that much.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but I noticed a lot less water drip when I started using a raised waterbowl inside. It almost forces them to finish drinking before starting to move around.

Before I got it they'd start lapping water and mid-lap they'd start bouncing around or walking in a circle in between getting drinks. If it's raised they actually have to stand there, drink water and then move or twirl or whatever it is they are doing. lol

I still get some drips but not nearly as much!

It's more Mia than Harry. I mean with Harry I get a few drips and that's not that big of an issue. With Mia I get huge puddles because she has a big gulp of water in her mouth and turns with it and drips most of it out of her mouth onto the floor.

GET THIS! I have the water in the garage so now we go out for potty and stop in on the way to get water. Well, guess what? No water dripping! I'm like what??? I don't understand these dogs of mine.LOL
