So, Ziva is looking like a BRINDLE. She is AKC registered as a brown/apricot, heck I don't care, and AKC does not allow her color anyway. I am fascinated, however, and have no idea how she will end up. I just love her, love her color, and am watching for surprises with each grooming session! She has silver-beige-y areas, and speckles, and I love the golden brown highlights. OK, I just love her, period.

Wow, she has a whole color pallet going on there. :) Maybe she has the Agouti gene?

"Genes also determine the color patterns of a dog's coat. Coat patterns include spotted, masked, patched, striped (brindle), dappled, merle and agouti (where each individual hair shaft has several alternating bands of color). "

Do the individual hairs have bands of color or is she striped with each hair being only one color? There is brindle and reverse brindle, too.

I am getting an education here, because I had NO idea that all those named variations exist! To answer your question, outwest, I THINK she may indeed have the agouti pattern (which I confess to have never heard of before, bless your heart!). I am up late and she is passed out cozily in her bed, but in the morning I am going to do a hair shaft study! I will give a full report :)

Ziva is such a pretty girl. It is fascinating watching how the colour and patterns develop. Sisko used to have almost apricot ears and highlights scattered here and there, creamy patches dotted around and finally settled on being mostly silver with blue brindle stripes. He was born mostly silver with his stripes showing. The stripes are way more evident when he is clipped short. Like you and the lovely Ziva, I just love him the way he is. He is a people magnet, everybody wants to see him and touch him. He has changed a lot of people's minds about their image of poodles and most telling I think at present is the reception he gets from the roofing crews who are working to replace all 120 roofs in our townhouse complex. These guys are pretty tough, doing hard work in the cold and wet, yet they stop work for a minute when the boy goes by to shout hello and admire him. He hasn't been out for a week because of his surgery and they wanted to know where he was and if he was OK.

Oh, Siskojan, what an impossibly lovely boy Sisko is! I apologize for not having seen him before, what an amazing transition in his colors. Good grief he is gorgeous. If I were one of those tough construction workers, I guess I'd hop down off the roof and come along on a walk with you two!

Do they do the construction man wolf whistle?

Well Larry does most of the walking and he hasn't reported any wolf whistles to me!

LEUllman - as to numbers of blue brindles I couldn't guess, shouldn't think too many breeders would be happy with the result - Sisko had 5 siblings. 2 were blue/white partis and the other 3 were blue brindles. Sisko was the least blue most silvery and his puppy name was Steel. They were all males. I especially loved his little dark face and was so glad that his breeder judged him to be a suitable pup for us. Mom, now retired, is a blue who gets silvery sable tips when her coat is long and Dad, now retired is a lovely muscly cream and white parti.

Parti's should have their own thread

I really do believe Parti Poodles should have their old thread...

... yanno, since they're the originals. ;) just sayin'...

(they only became 'unusual' when humans decided to start exterminating them, before then 'parti' color was the color people thought of when they thought poodle as can be seen in the history books from the 1600s, 1700s, 1800s, and even early 1900s)

Okay, so I gotta ask; Is Rango very well trained, or does he just love to pose for the camera? Your pictures are wonderful, and he looks totally relaxed and cooperative. He is a very nice looking guy, and he looks like a cuddly snuggler. :)
Awwww thx LW. He is really even tempered, easy to train & , seemingly, quite likes having his picture taken. I guess one could say, he's a bit of a ham as he he smiles for the camera most of the time. I especially get a kick out of the "hey baby" look he often offers- 3rd pic from bottom

Phantom Brindle

Ziva's color is rapidly lightening, and her brindle-ness is popping out. Recent photos from her latest grooming session:

Rango is very handsome and the groomer did a great job (did you do it yourself?).

Poodlemama's babies are all adorable- love them snuggled up on the bed.

Ziva is for sure a brindle, my goodness. It is stunningly clear. She doesn't look phantom at all. Isn't it fun when their coat changes? You never know quite what you have, unless they are nonfading black, until they are a closer to a year old. She's beautiful. I would keep her cut short just to show off her coloring. :)

I was reading up on a thread here about color and the poodle standard. I didn't post on that thread because I was too skeered, and have a lot of respect for the breeders and other professionals who make a lot of great points about pros and cons of the standard vs colors that vary from it.

I did a lot of things kind of wrong when I picked out Ziva, including that I bought her from a breeder that really, truly, was not up to snuff. In fact, her pedigree, when I registered her with AKC, came back as completely different from what I was told her parents were at the time I picked her. I mean, sire and dam... completely different in name from the dogs who were pointed out to me on-site as her sire and dam.

I have learned a lot since going to that breeder, and in future will do differently. Also, regarding color, I just loved her looks, but mostly picked her personality.

I got lucky with this dog, and she is turning out to be wonderful in every respect ... I will always pick a pup or an adult based on personality and potential for work and for my lifestyle, but I have learned a lot about where to start.
