Post Spay - itchy and no peeing!

Hi all,

My MP (15 months old) had a laparoscopic spay on Wednesday, all went well, but we have a couple of issues I’m worrying about. She has been fairly quiet and subdued, but it’s is only 48 hours since the op. She is eating fine, and doesn’t seem to be in any discomfort other than itching.

Brought her home Wednesday evening, but she didn’t toilet until midday the following day, and she hasn’t toileted since. I have of course spoken with the vets, but that was just before she did finally go yesterday. I will be calling again in a couple of hours if she hasn’t gone again, but was wondering if it is fairly normal? She also isn’t drinking, but we are getting around that by adding plenty of water to her small meals through the day, so I’m not worried about dehydration (It’s very hot here, UK heatwave). She’s eating fine.

Second, she is very itchy and frantically trying to nibble and scratch. She initially had a cone on, but has scratched herself raw above the wound site where she could reach. She is now wearing a cut down tshirt to stop the scratching, but I was wondering if there are any creams or ointments I can safely use to reduce the itching where she has scratched - it is red and raw in patches. I will ask the vet about it if we need to call them about the peeing issue, but if there’s something I can just pick up locally that would be useful, I’m thinking an Aloe Vera gel or something like that? Any recommendations?

Hello.
Eating is a positve - obviously.
As you are 'wetting' her food then just maybe that is working for her.
I think under the circumstances you do need to get your vet's opinion and advice - I'm sure that it isn't anything unheard of, and will be sorted.
Vet vet vet !!!
I imagine they will give you something for the itch - Hibiscrub for instance.
You do have the sod of a situation with this heatwave, so extra vigilance will be needed. ( Offer her an ice cube perhaps)?
We didn't use a cone for our Poppy, she had a post op suit. Though with this heat...

Poppy had an issue after her spay, an infection when her wound 'leaked'.
Point is we got her off to the emergency vet immediately, which paid off.

Don't worry too much, I'm sure it will be ok.
Again vet, vet ,vet.

I would talk to the vet - always best to get their advice in this sort of situation. Chicken stock is a good way of getting them to drink a little more - just simmer a skinless chicken breast in unsalted water and freeze in an ice cube tray. One cube in a little tepid water makes a good drink for a small dog.

As you won't be walking her much just yet I would adapt a thin cotton onesie - I used cheap ones from Asda very successfully for Poppy. A few snips made them fit around her tail and bits and she didn't need a cone. If your dog is very itchy she may need both - the cone to keep her from nibbling the incision, the coverup to protect her skin from scratching. Just make sure you get a big enough size, going by body length rather than weight.

We are seeing the vet later this afternoon. She has done a wee, so that’s 2 in 2 days! We are hanging out in our living room as it’s the coolest room, with the ceiling fan on full so it’s not too bad in here. She had some meaty soup for lunch (small portion of forthglade mixed with a cup of water). Recovery suit ordered, should be here by this evening so she can wear that overnight as that’s when she is doing the damage with the scratching. The cone is a little small, but she’s not wearing it now anyway as it didn’t stop her scratching, and the T-shirt covers everything.

Well the vet didn’t seem concerned, said to give her another couple of days and she should be back to normal. He prescribed some wipes and cream for the scratches, and she is now wearing a proper body suit. I’ve had dogs all my life but don’t remember one being like this after the op! She is still really quiet, not her usual self at all. Hopefully she’ll perk up over the weekend.

Years ago we had a dog spayed. She had an allergic reaction to adhesive used on her wound site. It caused the site to delay healing and was very itchy for her - we feared she would open the wound back up. Since your vet is not concerned, it’s probably fine but if she keeps itching, the could be something to address.

She is still itching, but other than the obvious scratches, no other sign of irritation, and she doesn't have any dressings on the skin. She's in a suit 24/7 now, and mostly leaving it alone, but as soon as the suit comes off for a toilet trip, she is back scratching again! But I guess it must feel odd when the suit is removed, which probably makes her want to scratch even more. Just have to wait and see - I think she'll be in the suit for at least a few more days yet, maybe a week or more. The lack of redness or obvious skin irritation is reassuring that there is nothing more sinister going on. And she is much perkier the last day or two which is nice to see :)
