"Is she a labradoodle?"

"She's half labradoodle."

"What's the other half?"

"No. She's half labradoodle." :burnout:

I get this question so often with Lila (cream poodle toddler), especially the week before her face gets shaved. So I've been crafting up a witty response!

I often get a weird inquiry about Poppy's ancestry, it goes something like this...

"Oh, how pretty. Is she full?"

HuH? Full?

Full what? I have had several people make the same inquiry. Maybe it's a regional thing? I finally figured out they were asking if she was "full poodle".
as in, PUREBRED poodle.

My goodness, the things people come up with.

Children can ALWAYS figure out what she is, why do the adults have to complicate things? Often, while we are out and about I will hear children say "Look Mommy, it's a poodle!" or "Oh, look at the pretty poodle!"
The kids are sharper than the adults, and I usually reply something like "You really know your dogs, don't you?" or "Great job, you are right, she IS a poodle."

I have always noticed that about kids. I remember walking the Chihuahuas and adults would often ask what breed they were and their children would inform them. LOL. Yep, I hear kids all the time saying what kind of dog they see. The adults are amazingly clueless...even with dogs so commonly known, as a poodle. Weird. :alberteinstein:

"Oh, how pretty. Is she full?"

We use that term where I live, too. Is she full-blood? Meaning of unmixed breeding...shortened down to "full". Full poodle. Full golden. Or "pure blood" again often just stated "pure". She pure poodle?

Remind me to tell you some time how a neighbor's labradoodle (heavy on the oodle side in appearance and personality) led to the rescue of another neighbor one early winter morning.

A couple of days ago I was walking the dogs at the park and came across a lady with a miniature poodle (a very rare sighting around here) so we stopped to chat. A little while later another lady was passing by and was admiring the dogs, she knew that the miniature was a poodle but then asked what breed my two dogs were...I mean really?! You're stood there with a miniature poodle and two larger but obviously identical dogs right in front of you (Gustav was even the same colour as the miniature) and you can't even recognise that they're the same breed???? When we told her they were ALL poodles she pointed at my two and said 'but they're not normal poodles though are they?' I was lost for words...

That's funny!!!

Well, it's confession time for me. One time I saw a dog that had very fluffy facial hair, was curly all over, a little fat, too large for a toy, kind of longer than tall... and sort of messy looking. I asked what kind of dog it was and was told it was a poodle! I was so embarrassed. I can't remember for sure now whether or not I had my poodles with me. I must have because I remember feeling very embarrassed. But then too, I think it was not a well bred poodle. :act-up:

Well, if we're confessing ... I cannot identify other dog breeds. First of all, I have allergies, so if the breed isn't hypoallergenic, I'm not interested. Second, and this is particularly true of small dogs, with all the puppy mills and bad breeding, a lot of dogs lie outside of breed norms, as PB said. Last, this applies to breeds with iconic show cuts, if they're not clipped in the standard way, I have no idea what they are. If you shave down a Maltese and a Bichon, I'm left guessing. I'll usually get the Poodle, but if even Poodles can look like Bichons. I think I've even guessed Pomeranian.:confused3:

"Is she a labradoodle?"

Hi Ana
What I'm finding is that PEOPLE DON"T UNDERSTAND WHAT A POODLE IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE. We have so many mixes now, and that seems to be what is popular. Newsflash folks, mixes don't have a 'look' as groomers are making it up as they go!
People still have an old idea that poodles have to be the fru fru dogs with the big hair, balls on the feet and tail and fluff on the back side! (continental or show trim)
A nice pet trim with some hair on ears and tail with a little height on the head is a lovely poodle cut.

My story comes from a client of mine whose poodle came to me a few months old from a different groomer. He had the fluffy cheeks and a poof on his head. I have thought all along he was a bichon poodle mix, but she insisted he was all poodle. I didn't see it...
She came recently for a regular trim and announced 'I've been doing my research and I want him NAKED!" She admitted having a tough time keeping him brushed, so thought we should try this! I timidly asked 'are you SURE?' to which she gave a joyous 'YES!'
Her little guy transformed into a lovely NAKED poodle, very little poof on his head and shaved ears, short all over. Magnificent!
Owner was blown away with his look, she is SO very happy! I am too!
Good news, he now LOOKS like a poodle and not a mix!

Our puppy Shae hasn't been out in public that much yet, but the few times she has, I've been asked several times if she was a doodle. I'm not as clever as the rest of you, so I have just been grinning and saying "nope, she's a straight up poodle".

One of the conditions of my husband allowing me to get a poodle was that he said I couldn't groom it like a poodle (he doesn't like that look apparently). So if I have to deal with the doodle question so I can have my poodle pup...small price to pay. I clipped her up with just a one length short clip and have only been trimming around her eyes, so I guess yes she does look like an overly poodley doodle.

Husbands may often be won over with the "comfort and sanitation" stance, firmly stated. Shaved feet to prevent splaying toes. Tail base and hindquarters attended to. Shaved face for cleanliness around the mouth and eyes. Maybe just a little length to the ears to prevent frostbite...

Voila! More poodle-y already!!

And bit by bit...year by year...

Would a scarf be out of the question, honey?

Haha I have to agree, my husband is against the poodly pom pom look but hey, tough luck - you can start making the decisions on how they get groomed once you start taking them to the groomers/feeding them/brushing them/walking them etc etc!! Gunther has gradually gone from shaved all over to this:

I've also noticed many people when they think "poodle" only imagine toys or maybe minis. Many people I meet are surprised when they find out Moses is a poodle. Their response is usually "I didn't know they get that big!" I then educate them on the 3 recognized sizes on poodles.

Also, my husband started off not wanting "the poodle look". Since I do the grooming I tried the shaved face first. Husband ended up liking it. Next time I did a shaved face and base of tail and he liked that too. Most recently I worked up to shaved face, base of tail AND feet. When my husband saw pictures of other spoos in that clip he wasn't much a fan; he loves the same clip on Moses. He's definitely started being swayed to more of a classic poodle look. We haven't gotten so far as a continental or banding but at this point I really don't see us going there. Maaaayybee a HCC one day just to give it a try.

That sounds like the exact comment, followed by the exact same conversation I have time and time again when I'm out walking the dogs!!
