I don't know if he is guarding, but Zephyr always goes into the bedroom and lays where he can see me when I go into the bathroom. He doesn't do this when I move around in other rooms of the house. Maybe they think we are vulnerable in there?

This is what the behaviorists say--they're looking out for you because you're in a vulnerable position. This is also why dogs make eye contact with us when they're pooping. They are watching us for any clues of impending danger and trusting us to protect them. The poodles always make eye contact with me when pooping, but some of our other dogs don't. It's interesting.

 

Never thought about that but mine also do, they will look for me while pooping if I am standing at the back door. I never leave them out with out watching them, and I thought they were just making sure I did not go in side.

 

Except when on vacation, I haven't been able to go to the bathroom unescorted in the past 50 years! If I do not close the door securely, Zoe will hook a paw in it to open it so she can check on me.

 

Holly and Noel were always in the bathroom with me, and now Remo and Neo do the same. One comes right in, then the other plays Cat for a while, half in half out, then finally comes in or lays down at the threshold. The girls used to curl up together. The boys just resume their 2 of the Three Stooges act.

It had never occurred to me that they might be taking their turn, looking out for me, as I do for them.

I often wonder what they think when they spend so much time finding just the right spot to poop and then we swoop in and pick it up and carry it away!

I used to have cats when I got my first Giant Schnauzer. She was (literally) raised in a barn and very hard to housebreak. The cats had their litterbox and food in a room that was closed off (I thought) by a gate. One day I got home from work to find a big pile of dog poop in the cat's room, where I thought she could not go. I went in and called her, and she took about five minutes to wiggle under the gate and get into the room. I was actually quite impressed that she figured out that the cats were allowed to poop in that room and so she should be able to as well, and that she took so much time and trouble to get in there.

When Vita posted this and the response was they are guarding to protect you, I thought that was odd. But I’ve been watching Babykins and she is doing this.

I’m another one who can’t shut the bathroom door, between babies, cats and dogs there has always been someone in the bathroom or wanting to get in the bathroom with me. One of my cats always parallel peed with me.

 

Since Molly never lets me out of her line of sight..........my bed is in sight of the bathroom, the door is never closed, so Molly, if not in the bathroom with me, is usually on the bed watching me! Many times when I get off the potty, she will jump off the bed and check out the toilet by looking into it while it is flushing.........I have no idea what she is looking for!LOL!!!

 

MollyMuiMa, Chuui does this too! LOL! I was just reading all these responses to my husband and he was laughing, but then he said "these two don't do nothing when I go to the bathroom!" I asked what he meant, and he said they stay sleeping or lounging on the couch while he goes two rooms away to use the bathroom. But I have never not been escorted by the girls. Even if they don't come right away, if I go in there and have the door shut, very soon I will hear demanding scratching and if I don't open the door, I can tell one of them is trying to pull the door open. If it is open, Chuui will shove in her nose and push it violently open and walk in while I'm on display to the whole kitchen. Mochi will paw until she has room to wiggle in. Clearly I am less able to defend myself in their eyes than my husband. :dontknow:

 

A little late to this thread but entertaining to read!

Our mpoo sleeps in an ex-pen with a "cubby" at one end. He'll lie down at the corner closest to the bathroom door and keep watch until I finish my nightly routine and am safely in bed. Only then does he go into his sleeping "cubby" for the night. Doesn't pay any mind to my husband's movements. [emoji23]

Granted, this is the same bathroom where he gets bathed, so perhaps he associates it with unpleasant things. [emoji849]
