Has anyone ever heard of containment phobia? I just saw a very interesting Ted Talk on how containment phobia is different from separation anxiety. Definitely worth watching:

That was good to watch and she brings up a very important problem.

I wonder what you can do though for dogs with containment phobias who live in northern climates ? What if having a doggy door isn’t an option ? Poor dogs...
It could be the idea of containment is different for each dog? Maybe having full access of the house instead of the laundry room is enough for some dogs?

But you do bring up an interesting issue - what if you live in an tiny high rise apartment? or what if there is serious weather keeping one indoors and contained such as a hurricane. Maybe some dogs need medication?

Are some breeds more likely to have this than others?

Bingo! There's a name for it. I'm thinking it can probably be broken down further to situational containment phobia.

For example, a co-worker told me yesterday she her large mixed breed destroyed the interior of her car over the weekend. She was taking him to the park and stopped at a store (it's cold in DC now, so no danger of him getting hot).

She adopted him over the summer; he's completely house broken and has never been a problem when she leaves him alone to go to work, uncrated. Because of this, it doesn't appear he has anxiety about being left alone.

She's driven him to a park many times without any problems whatsoever. Inside the car alone? He tore out the rubber insulation around the window, chewed up the visors, tore up part of the ceiling, and basically went nuts and it'll cost her over $1,000.

Or then again, could it be he gets anxious for her when left alone in a strange place, even though he's in the car?
