I’m new to the forum! Can’t someone recommend the best grooming clippers for standard poodles?

Hi and Welcome!

Farleysd has a lot of experience in this so that has to be a great recommendation :).

I'm not sure there's a single "best" clipper. There are a number of crowd favorites, however. Corded clippers tend to be a better choice because they have the power to get thru a standards denser coat. Many members start with a cordless 5 in 1 style for early days then use it later for FFT after adding a corded style.

What's your grooming experience?

I'm going to add a few links to some recent threads over in the grooming forum that go over all this. That'll give you some additional reference.

These are recent and hit all the highlights, They're longer thread but worth going all the way thru if this is new to you :). Come on back with your questions after looking these over.

If you go back to March of last year, you'll also find threads from members who found themselves having to dive in and learn fast.

Are you looking then to stick with cordless or switch to corded?

If cordless, Wahl has a good range still. Most members have the Bravura but a few have other Wahl models. I have the Motion. Farleysd has the Wahl mentioned above.

Andis has the Pulse Li 5 and the new Vida in a similar price range. They also have some much higher priced models but the only model mentioned so far by any members is the Pulse.

For corded, the recommendations are fairly evenly split between the Oster A5, the Wahl KM10, and the Andis AGC2. There's no single one overwhelmingly recommended because they're all good but enough of a difference to accommodate personal preferences in how they feel in hand.

These all come with a single detachable blade. The fixed blade cutting length that comes with is either a #10 or #30. To get the flexibility to do different lengths, you'll need to invest in several different blades to get the different lengths and a set of the steel combs if you want to have a longer clip. If you have the steel combs for your 5 in 1 cordless, those won't fit the corded clipper blades.

Thank you so much! That info is extremely helpful!!

Reviving an old thread, with a brand spanking new account.

I don't care. I hope anyone else googling this post will see my comments...

In my online search, one of the things that always gave me the heebie jeebies was the commercial sales talk. I spent a fair few evenings over several weeks trying to investigate the accuracy of product claims. Between THIS thread on THIS forum, and some other stuff I found on reddit, I took the leap of faith and went to petsmart (not proud about that), to pick up the WAHL KM10. After getting it home, i was very annoyed to discover the box did not come with any clips/combs/forks/attachments/funny hats. I would have appreciated the clerks bringing that to my attention, because now i have to go back. Nuisance trip...

in any case, We had another clipper, bought used, that struggled to nip through the dogs hair, even if we gave it a fighting chance. With new WAHL KM10 in hand, the hair was flying off of the dog with the slightest graze, and no preparation. I'm very pleasantly satisfied with the purchase. As the germans might say, "Das ist eine gute Wahl" (hue hue hue, verrrrry punny).

I will probably annoy everyone again when i revive the thread~6-12 months from now to report how the unit is holding up. I no longer have faith in consumer goods, and neither should you.

Welcome to PF.

It's not clear to me what your full experience is with the home grooming endeavor so I'll err on the side of caution with these next bits.

These take a single (cut length) detachable blade, which is why you need more than one, not only for different cut lengths, but to switch out as the blade heats up. Home groomers like us usually get the several blade lengths they'll use regularly rather than using steel combs when using a corded SDB clipper. Users report a better finish this way. The single detachable blades don't come as long as the guide combs allow so that's a consideration.

The combs to get will snap on rather than slide on as with the 5 in 1 clippers.

FWIW, I've had my 5 in 1 Wahl clipper for 4 years, using them about every two weeks to clip my two miniature boys. So far, so good.

I recommend either Oster or Wahl. These are professional grade and last for years - I have one Oster that is at least 40 years old and still going strong. That said, much depends upon the blades. Keeping blades clean and sharpened will make your clipper last much, much longer. All three of my clippers are corded.

My Oster was an A5
Lasted over 20 years
With one refurbished only.
When the Oster gave up, I sent my groomer to pick out new clippers. She decided on the Andis. So far we are both well pleased with the Andis.
