When to get a second one

I have my adorable Wrigley and love him. He is almost 13 weeks and I got him at 8 weeks. I will say that I love the breed and would love to have another one some day. (Of course, hubby would have to give his consent which is a huge factor). I don't even think my next one would need to be a young pup. I would be just as happy with a young adult. Maybe a rescue or one from a home that couldn't keep it... but here is my question - when do you think a good time to bring in a second one is?

Lots of people get more than one puppy from the start, but for me that would be way to much to deal with. I would want the first puppy to be reliably obedience trained before bringing in another. But that's just for me, I'm sure some people would say training 2 at the same time wasn't that much more work and alot of people don't train at all. Of course that's an altogether different topic

I can't live with a dog that doesn't listen and behave well, that slot is already taken by the kids. LOL!

I agree. Even though I work, I have more free time than a lot of people and still feel like I don't have enough time to spend training Max. For me I want to be sure that I only have one dog to focus on with respect to training. The other, less pleasant issue is the fact that our dogs are not with us for very long. I hate to think about this but it's worth considering. Do you want to deal with the heartache and expense of two aging dogs at the same time?

But all that's easy to say. For me it all goes out the window, when I want a puppy! We love Max and I want another one too. For us, two dogs is our limit and I definitely want Max to be well trained before I can handle a puppy.

So many dogs, so little time...

I love Ginger so much and I wanted another poodle to play with her. I obsessed about it and checked the petfinder site etc until I found Teddy. I think maybe I should have just been satisfied with one. He is getting better but its hard to train two dogs - I didn't know he needed training since he was 2 but he didn't know squat. Lot of work. Be sure you are ready. lol

I haven't found having multiple dogs to be too difficult (its has its days though) but having two Poodles with grooming need's seemed to be a lot for me.

I have decided that one Poodle is more than enough now but I couldn't do that with Amstaffs. My issue is making time for the up keep for the style of cut I want on my Poodle (s).

If you want another male Poodle I believe its best to introduce either puppy to puppy or adult to puppy. Trying to get two adult male's to understand and be happy with there place in the pack can be more difficult. If you got a female that would probably be a little easier with your male anytime. Thats what's worked best in my experience.

Our GSD (Locky) was 10 yrs old when we got the standard (T) - both male but T was only 8 weeks old when we brought him home. Locky is extremely well behaved, sociable and really just an all round wonderful dog (my soul dog) :smile:

He has made having a pup so much easier cause he comes when called and the little one follows, doesn't make a fuss when the pup is eating so we don't have to seperate them at meal times, Locky is very tolerant of T's puppy behaviour and they play well together. I really think it depends on the dogs.

I was a little hesitant about getting a pup cause Locky is very dependant/needy and has seperation anxiety and I wondered if he would crack up completely having to share our affection, but in our case it has been the dead opposite. Locky is more sure of himself and seems happier within himself for having a companion.

If I thought in anyway my OH would agree I would get another standard tomorrow. Have my eye on a litter to be born mid December, expecting silvers, which I would love to have. I'm like you Curlydog - too many dogs, too little time! I don't know how people cope with the grooming if your not set up properly. I have a grooming area set up ready to go and can groom at anytime day or night, warm water hydrobath, dryer etc ... If I just had the bathtub like we did in the old house I would find it very difficult.
