What would you do

We have a neighbor who lets their medium sized dog out to potty unsupervised and doesn’t clean up. Dog makes on their lawn and the neighbors.

Babykins is always walked to potty and today she chose to poop immediately next to an old poop on their lawn. I only picked up my dog’s poop. I also took my time picking up the poop in case anyone was watching because I don’t want a reputation of not picking up poop.

What would you do?

Would you generously pick up all the poop because you had the poop bag open and were prepared to pick up poop? My daughter will do that, but she has 4 horses in her back yard and picks up horse poop twice a day.

Or are you like me and squeamish and would leave it behind?

I would not pick up someone else's dogs poop. I have nailed 2 people on my street that do not pick up after their dog and on my property, even though the street runs between my house and the rest of the lot.

If we're at the dog park or a regular park and I'm already picking up Merry's poo I'll pick up a pile or two nearby. Mostly because I don't want my dog, my kid, or myself to step in other dogs poop while playing. It really ticks me off how lazy and disrespectful people are

Yes, if I’m already picking up I’ll also take other poo - it does no one any good leaving it there even if it’s frustrating that people are so inconsiderate.

If I am walking and I see a pile, I will scoop it up. I despise people not cleaning up after their dogs , So since I always have a bag with me I clean it up, n to always but usually.

This is part of why I am glad to have a fenced yard. On the occasions I walk in my neighborhood (uncommonly for a myriad of reasons) I will often pick up from other dogs but it is exceedingly rare that I have to pick up after my own as I make them go before we leave the yard. I am more inclined to pick up if there are garbage cans out for collections. I don't like carrying around a bag of stuff that might have come from a dog with GI illness.

I do usually pick up any poop I see when at a hotel. It is hard to find nice places to stay with dogs and I don't want to risk not being able to use a good place because conformation people (and yes it really is them much more than obedience or rally folks) don't pick up.

I wouldn’t pick another dog’s poop unless there on my yard. I clean after mine because I have to. It ‘s gross and I won’t touch anymore than necessary.

I have done both ways. When I was at the dog park, which is an exceedingly rare occurrence, I bent down to pick up my dog's poo and there was another poo of some other dog's near by so I went ahead and grabbed that. There are garbage cans right there and it was not a big deal. And yep...my dogs just might get into it or someone might not see it and step in it. Most people in my dog park, I think pick up their dog poo pretty well, but I think what happens sometimes is that they aren't watching and miss it. If I'm walking with my dogs somewhere, I won't pick up other poo because I hate carrying stuff. My dogs' poo is barely anything...tiny, no more than the size of my pinky and I don't want to carry something heavier or fuller when I have two leashes in my hands if I don't have to. So I don't pick up other poo typically. I think I have once or twice though. I don't see much dog poo where people walk or in peoples' yards. My town is full of retirees...most are pretty responsible.

As for the neighbor, I would scout them and learn their potty times. Then, I'd lie in wait wearing sunglasses and a trench coat. As soon as the dog squatted I'd run over and hand the owner a poop bag. Smile, nod.

Michigan Gal my neighbor did that with another dog whose owner refused to pick up poop. She didn’t nod, she made a clear statement that they had to pick up every time. It worked.

This particular neighbor lives next door to their cousin. The dog only potties on those two lawns, no one else’s. The cousin has been mad about this since they moved in a few years ago. The rest of us prefer to stay out of this battle since the dog doesn’t potty our lawns and the neighbors are related.

It is interesting to see who’s squeamish and who isn’t. I rarely find poop on my property but If I do, I pick it up: sometimes it’s from a wild animal. I have picked up poop in parks if it’s near the kids playground. But I refuse to pickup poop on my neighbors property that their dog left especially when they never pick it up from their lawn or their poor cousin’s lawn.

It depends on the size of the poop - I have small bags suitable for small dogs. If there is something small near where my dogs have gone, or right on the path where it might get trodden in, I will often pick it up. Very big stuff tends to get left as my bags are simply not suitable. At the moment there are many areas where we can walk off leash - I don't want the rules changed because of idle and inconsiderate dog walkers.

I would have picked up both if my dog pooped on someone else's lawn next to one of theirs just so I could not be accused of letting my dog leave something there. Even if you took your time "picking up in case anyone was watching" no one would know you picked up yours and left the other dogs, they would have seen your dog and assumed you left some. I will also play devil's advocate and say I would not let my dog go on someone else's lawn either. Like Lily CD, I have a fenced yard and usually potty them before I walk if I am walking at a time I anticipate they may poop. But when I am walking them, I don't let them walk on neighbor's lawns for the reason they just might go on them even if I am not expecting, dogs are dogs. I wouldn't appreciate my neighbors letting their dogs walk or potty on my front lawn either and have said things to some of them who have, particularly one neighbor who lets their male lift his leg on one of the trees in the grass median in front of my house. There are metal light pole stanchions in various places and urine is not going to damage them.....

Eclipse, I would prefer my dog to potty on my property.

She won't potty until she has had a good walk. I've done two serious tries of trying to get her to potty on our property - taking her out just to one area and taking her back into the house and limiting her movement - like you would a puppy - she would hold in her pee and poop. Even with treats it just became frustrating and unpleasant. She was almost a year old when I got her, toilet trained and already had her habit of requiring walking a distance before potty.

In the winter if we get a few inches of snow - we dig out a grassy knoll. We still have to walk her in the middle of the street - and only when she finds she can't access grass anywhere else will she potty on the grassy knoll.

I don't think it's unusual to walk your dog and allow it to potty on your neighbor's grass as long as you keep your dog close to the edge, within a few feet AND pick up the poop.

I'm not sure where male dog's should urinate. The urine is destructive to trees and plants, especially if continually peed upon........ but it's corrosive and destructive to metal light pole stanchions - and has been the cause of some poles toppling over causing additional damage.

We will have to agree to disagree. I don't think it is the usual or courteous thing to let your dogs relieve themselves on other people's lawns. I don't want my neighbors letting their dogs potty on my front lawn, just as I don't let mine go on theirs. I like to keep my front lawn looking nice and if people walking dogs let them pee on it, I will have urine burns/dead spots in it, etc. And I don't know whether other dogs are routinely checked for parasites, etc. so don't want them pooping on my front lawn either. I keep my dogs to the grass median in front of houses, or in the street.

My neighbor's golden retriever won't go to the bathroom in her back yard. She is frustrated by this and has to take the dog for a walk. LOL. We have a lot of vacant lots here in this neighborhood that are just full of weeds, wild stuff. But not for long, as they build more houses. Anyhow, she said once in the middle of the night he had to go to the bathroom and she told him, "No way am I taking you down the road for a walk. You just GO out here in the back yard." And he did after a long wait. haha.

I try not to let my dogs go on neighbor's lawn and instead if they must, to go on the parking strip, which is city property. But sometimes they catch me off guard with the pooping. I don't let them pee on neighbor's bushes for sure but sometimes in the median. Their urine won't likely hurt acid loving plants, of which we have many in this part of the country. I try to get down the road fast so if they have to go, it will be in a wild area or the farm land...right on the edge. I don't mind if someone's dog poops on my lawn as long as they pick it up. Pee...no way...don't like that. And it never happens anyhow here...neither kind. So sure...it's preferable if they go in their own yard first. Sometimes they do and they still want to go more. It's a "crap" shoot. haha. I don't think it's a huge deal. It is what it is when there are animals in this world. Heck, I see coyote poop in lots of areas. And giant goose poop...much bigger than my dogs' poos. No one picks that up. haha. :argh:What's a person to do?

My dogs go before we leave the house and I do not let them go on anyone's lawn. I am an wild woman if I see someone on my front yard, as my girls only go out back so not letting anyone else go there. Even though my dogs go at home, I won't let them walk on other people's property just in case they had a slip up. My property is my property and not your dogs potty patch. Had 2 labs off leash, I quickly put a stop to that, as they pooped in my driveway, and Talbot County has a lease law, no off lease in town. Called who I thought owned the dogs, but it was his tenant, so said next time I am calling. a very nice wooded fence was constructed that week.

Yes, I don't let my dogs go on other people's lawns either. This is where the potty on command taught to puppies comes in really handy. We don't have sidewalks in my neighborhood, so the curb is the properly maintained lawn of a neighbor. Not that everyone in my neighborhood is nice about this. there is a nut job old woman who walks a couple of rescue dogs for whom she clearly spends most of her time feeling sorry for who I have seen bring her male dog off the street and about five feet onto my lawn where there is a small ornamental shrub just so he has something to lift his leg against. She is the same moron who once insisted that Lily and Peeves greet her dogs in the street. While I was trying to explain to her that I didn't want them to greet or play in the street managed to take my attention off Peeves who tried to run over to them and almost got hit in the head on the front quarter of a passing car. After that she followed me down the street yelling at me about how I shouldn't be walking an aggressive dog in the neighborhood. Between no sidewalks and such encounters we mostly don't walk our streets. Ugh.

A neighbor picks it up and returns it to the owner as "lost". I don't know if it is worth causing a feud, but it is really unpleasant to do this.

If I picked it up it would be deposited on their porch daily until they dealt with it. I can't bend at the waist but I use a scoop to clean up after my 65 pound SPOO and if I can do it anyone can!
