What do your poodles think of the rain?

Lily hates it. When she was an adolescent (spring time) she was prone to some housebreaking setbacks if there were rainy days back to back. She was a sneaky pee girl who would go in the basement rather than spending a single second outside if she could help it. I still have to put a leash on her and walk her around in the back yard if the grass is long when it rains because she won't go out and instead will just try to wait out the rain.

On the other hand at about 5:00 AM this morning I let Javelin out and he didn't pee or poo, but instead sat on the deck in the rain. He stayed out long enough that I decided to walk away from the door to go get a tissue since my nose was stuffy. Eventually he gave a little bark to let me know he was ready to come in.

Peeves is happy enough in the rain, but hates it if there is thunder. Neither of the poodles worries too much about thunder or lightning though.

Poppy tolerates rain if it is not too heavy; Sophy hates it. It is difficult to persuade her out if the ground is wet, if it is actually raining, or if she decides it is about to rain. I have learned to listen to her when she says it is time to turn back when we are out walking - she is usually right!

It doesn't rain here very often, but when it does Molly will NOT go outside unless I take her out on a leash. Then she kinda 'tiptoes' thru the grass and barely squats to pee! Whats funny though, is if we are out on the cement sidewalks she doesn't mind being in the rain..............it's just wet grass she hates, not the weather!

I can't say I blame Molly or Lily for not wanting to squat to pee in wet grass!

Lucky you!

We've only had light rain since I brought Archie home so far, but he wasn't bothered by it at all. He does tend to avoid wet wood chips (which is what his potty area is mostly made of), but even then he'll walk through them if he has to.

Haven't had rain in days and it has been raining all day. It is much needed. :)

Zoe hated the rain when she was younger, now she tolerates it. she will do her business as quickly as possible to come back in.
I am happy she does do what is expected. I remember those housebreaking days of saying my will is stronger than hers... once i stayed out for 25 mins in pouring rain to wait for a pee.

Isn't it though? Early on this morning it was just running off the ground and into the street in my area since the ground was so dry. Now it is soaking in but there is lots of road flooding and I read that many people on Long Island have no power. I was supposed to have an agility lesson this evening. Needless to say we are washed out, but I am happy for the rain. My pool is getting ready to overflow though.

Tonka's kind of indifferent to it. But I remember the first day we were out in the rain since I'd rescued him. Coming in the door, he just stood there, off-leash but didn't move.

To make a long story short, I finally discovered he was used to... from his previous owner... being dried off when coming in from the rain, and was waiting for me and a towel. lol

We have a routine called Nice Warm Towels - I keep dog towels on the radiator by the door and getting snuggled and dried in a warm towel is the best bit of a wet walk for my two!

Gracie does not mind the rain but likes to stay dry. She will wait until the last possible moment then run out to do what needs to be done and streak back in. No accidents yet but then she has her own door at home and while away is quite vocal about her business. nose bump, Stare at door, Stare at Daddy, repeat until action occurs.

The ONLY one of my Poodles who liked rain was Tuffy. He liked ANYTHING to do with water! Baths, water coming out of the hose, running in the rain, you name it, he loved it. My other Poodles would run and get to where it's dry, but not Tuffy, lol.

Isn't it interesting how each dog is so different!

Pericles doesn't mind light rain at all but if it's pouring he does not like to go out.

Jupiter will willingly go out to do his business in the rain, but prefers dry weather.

The late Hecuba had weather standards, big time. Her criteria for a good walk were between 45 and 80 degrees F, no rain, absolutely no snow, and little wind. She had to be coaxed to go out when her standards were not met, and could hold everything for many many hours (until she got Cushing's, but that's another story...)

Depends on what they are doing. For example: last night we went for a walk in a light drizzle and they could not get enough. The walk is the highlight of their day and rain is not a problem. They could walk forever- sniffing the wet grass, lapping up puddles....they're into it.

Fast forward to this morning, same kind of light drizzle, and I'm now coaxing them out in the backyard to do their business before I leave. To them, the yard is only a bathroom- they don't do too much else in it and they all act like I'm sending them to the execution chamber when I send them out in inclement weather. These little guys seem to have titanium bladders and will hold it forever if the conditions in the yard are not to their liking (snow, rain, etc). I have a doggie door but knowing they will hold it forever, I will put them out if the weather is iffy. Maybe I should just let them hold it!

My dogs' opinion of the rain is directly related to what activity is on the docket! Fickle little dogs they are:act-up:

Sisko doesn't mind the rain but really objects to the raincoat. You would think we were hanging a 20 lb weight on him as his belly sinks towards the floor in protest. He happily goes out into the yard to do his thing in the rain. Wind is a different proposition on walks. He does not like it. He has a super good nose and I wonder if it is just too disturbing to smell scents on the wind that he knows don't belong in the location he is actually in. He likes to stand on the back deck though and sample the air, nose lifted, muzzle puffing in and out like a bellows. He'll do that for a long time and eventually when he's had enough he'll come in and settle down.

Just an addendum: when we had hurricane Sandy, the last time I thought it was safe to go out was just before we lost electricity, around 2PM on Monday. From then it was wild, mostly with wind but also rain. I tried to see if Jupiter and Hecuba would do anything in the garage, but they held it all in. Finally around 3:30 AM the wind abated somewhat and we went in the yard and the poor pooches had some relief...

Cooper is like the post office - neither rain nor snow, nor sleet nor hail affects his desire to have his walk delivered to him. He's even asked to go out in the middle of a driving thunderstorm, complete with wind, lightening and thunder. Snow a foot deep? Ice storm? Driving rains? All perfect walk times.

The only weather he does not like is high temps combined with humidity. If it's 85 and not humid, he doesn't mind. But 85 plus humidity - he runs back into the nice air conditioned house ASAP. Me, too. LOL!
