When do you know when you can walk a rescued Toy Poodle off leach?
I have a rescued male that has been with me only about 6 weeks. I would like to work with him outside of my small fenced yard to do some training. But I do not know if its time yet.
I have taken him to the local fenced dog park but they have a really bad problem with FLEAS and I am struggling to get the fleas Guido has already under control. So I'm not so sure I want to take him back there. Also when he has been at the dog park there are too many distractions for me to do dog training. Although strangely enough he does come when I call him there, but not other times.
He does know the new name (I have giving him). He is good at sit and stay. But 'come' is a challenge. I'm not sure why -- he looks at me me sort of puzzled.
I have tried enticing him with treats but he seems uninterested.
His ears perk up when he hears a person whistle on TV.
I think the previous owner whistled. But I can't whistle, its one thing I have tried all my life to do but can't seem to.
So I haven't let him off leach because I'm afraid he might run off and end up back at doggie jail. :vroam:
Any ideas when it's time to walk off leach?
