UTI question

I think Saleen may have a UTI

poor baby. Two days ago she started pee'ing on the kitchen floor, she's done it twice now. I discovered this weekend that she had been pee'ing on the bed in her kennel as well. I thought it was because she had been kenneled to long that day and removed the bed so I could watch and see if the problem continued. I've begun to notice over the last couple of days that she doesn't "hold it" for more than 30-45 minutes or so. She did not have unlimited access to water in the last two weeks in an effort to get her on a more stable schedual for potty training. She was doing just great until just a few days ago.

Today I brought her to work and she pee'ed in her kennel three times in the space of two hours. Each time I rushed her outside where she again pee'ed. After the third time I tok her out of the kennel entirely and put a harness on her so I could hook her leash to the wall and put a potty pad down for her to use. All together she has pee'ed 8 times between 10am-and now... it's just before 2pm.

She has an appointment with the vet to do her last set of shots on Monday. That is the earliest I can get her in since it's already Thursday

I really don't have much experience with UTI's in animals. I am wondering if there is anything I can do at home in the meantime to make her more comfotable? Her temp. is normal, and she now has unlimited water. Is there anything I can give her? Does a little cranberry juice work for dogs lol?

Star just was treated for one.

She was peeing constantly and wanted to squat, squat, squat.

Maybe your vet is willing to give some antibiotics now, before the visit, to treat the symptoms. Call them.

Antibiotics helped immediately with Star.

Cranberry would irritate the already uncomfortable pup right now. It is good for creating an enviroment that fends off UTIs but isn't good for treating them, I believe I have read somewhere.

I have pledged to give Star a mini back end bath once a week and to keep her fur very short to avoid more infections.

I'm watching Sophie trying to decide if she has one. Does Saleen's girl place look more yellow or guncky at all? And is there a metal/strong smell? Not really stinky - just a strong smell. I've taken Sophie in once but since I couldn't get a urine sample, the vet said watch her and keep her clean. We go on Tues as well, so I'm curious.
Cranberry juice does help treat UTI's in people (I know from personal experience - the doctor told me to get some and use it even with my antibiotics) but I have no idea if it would help a puppy. I'd be curious about that too.

I'm sorry to hear that Saleen isn't feeling well. Such a nasty problem and so uncomfortable. I hope you find something that helps her before she goes to the vet. I have a history of UTI's and have always been told to drink Cranberry juice. I didn't find it helpful either. I don't know if you can give it to a dog. I hope she is feeling better soon.

I had some downtime at work and did a keyword search on home remedy's for canine uti, I came up with several refferences to cranberry but most of them mentioned it being more of a prevenative measure than anything else. Only one listed it to help in treatment. I'm a little leary of some of the info I'm finding, it seems to be written with the person who is trying to go to the vet at all in mind. Thats not the case here, she IS going to the vet.

Anyway just for general info in case anyone in interested in the short research session I did I ran across apple cider vinegar in a ton of places to treat. Since I happen to have some of that on hand I will give it a try and see if it helps until the vet visit.

I am going to go to my mother's house and raid the med. kit to see if we have anything in there that can hold her over, if not then we are on our own with the ACV. Neither of the doctors that would give me meds prior to my appt are in today or tomarrow so I can't get anything from the vet until Monday.

The problem seems to be progressing quickly though

I am now starting to see tinges of blood in the urine and leaking.

Since Saleen is almost black in color I can't tell if she is yellow. I did wipe her rear end before leaving work and found trces of blood (she's a bit young to come in heat... 16 weeks or so). When she pees it DOES have a strong smell which is part of what caused me to take serious notice today. I could smell the urine from a couple feet away. In fact I had my backturned to her at one point and didn't see her pee but knew the minute she did because of the odor. I'm not sure I would call it metallic.... maybe kind of yeasty?? Definitly stinky lol.

I'm disapointed that I can't give her cranberry juice, it always helped me too lol. Now I'm paranoid and think I will go pick up some juice for me LoL

I was just going to say apple cider vinegar.
I would give her about a teaspoon a day.
Cranberry juice is good too,but to avoid the sugar,you can do it in a form of a pill.
Also,make sure she drinks TONS of water to flush.
Adding a bit of chicken broth(no salt,which makes the UTI worse)will make her drink more.
All of this until she sees a vet,of course.

If you are seeing blood in her urine,you should try to see a vet before Monday.
Any vet,somewhere?

I treated mandy and Casey with mega doses of crandberry and applesider vinager to the point the vet said keep it up another day and she didn't need antibiotics.
I gave her like 3 strong pills every couple hours and put vinager in water and on food for few days. I had her almost normal in less then 2 days.
I kept up the cranberry for a couple days longer.

Females young pups get it easy as they squat so close to the ground they almost touch.

I bet the vet would get her in friday for that though. Emergencies they will just not rush in for shots

The blood is after the intial urination, she will squat a few minutes later and strain and the urine that comes out with be ever so slightly pink, OR you can pick it out on a paper towel if you wipe the area after that.

My mother gave me something that might tie us over antibiotic wise, but I am debating giving it to her. I just have issues using meds that way...

The only doctor the clinic has tomarrow is the one that I will not allow to see my dogs. I'm not sure she even can see Saleen without supervision. She is only allowed to see very very basic things right now (she's fresh out of school) and isn't allowed to do much more than vacinations. I have a couple of other reasons I won't use her that I'll keep to myself out of respect. Suffice it to say that neither of my regular doctors(who own the clinic by the way) trust her, so neither do I.

Really it's pretty much a moot point they don't consider a UTI an emergancy so they won't work her in anyway unless they already have an opening. As for the other clinics in the area, I can call and ask - which I'll do in the morning, but if you're not their client it's pretty standard that they send you packing and won't work you in. Even with serious illnessness I'm sorry to say

I am going to try and make a go of it with the vinegar for tomarrow and if she gets any worse and is in pain I'll have no choice but to try and take her to the emergancy clinic over the weekend. I really don't have the cash on hand for that.... they are ton more expensive compaired to what it costs to see my reg. doctor and she's about the most expensive in the area. I can't afford 5 or 6 hundred dollars unless it's really life or death... I really really REALLY hope the vinegar keeps her from getting worse at the very least until Monday.

I spiked her drinking water a teaspoon of craberry juice to try and get her to drink, but I do notice that she seems to not want to drink much of anything. Thats a completed about face from normal behavior. Normaly she would drink like it's the last drink she'll ever get. Maybe I'll try the chicken broth, I bet she would like that and maybe some cranberry pills for the weekend.

Well, if the new vet you don't care for checks her with you present then I'd think things would be ok right? Then you can atleast get the antibiotics for the weekend and get her better sooner then later. I personally wouldn't chance having to take her to the emergency clinic. ($$$) UTI's are not pleasant at all and can become painful if not treated quickly. I have always had to have antibiotics to clear up a UTI and I choose to drink the cranberry as a precaustion. I love cranberry juice though. lol

Hopefully you can get something going tomorrow and not have to wait till Monday. Good luck!

She is very uncomfortable and it hurts to have an infection please either take her in or get her the cranberry pills as soon as possible

our little Gabie had a UTI once and when we took her to vet he had to keep her a couple of days - she was dehydrated.( she is very little - almost like a t oy) Try to make her drink. Hope she is better soon!

I called today and she isn't allowed to see dogs that will require "lab work". So anything that requires tesing blood/urine she can't do unspupervised, with the exception of heartworm tesing because apparently that is pretty hands off. They just pop the blood in the little test thingy and it either changes color or doesn't.

It isn't really an issue of me being present for the exam or not Jen, there are some other issues there, that resulted in a death. Everyone makes mistakes... but forgive and forget is taking a long time in this case.

I was lucky enough to run into the vet at walmart today, lol, we were both buying cranberry pills... what are the odds of that??
I asked her what she thought and she said the antibiotics I had would be fine for the weekend so go ahead and give them. She also said the cranberry pills wouldnt hurt. She hadn't heard of using apple cider vinegar before.

Today Saleen is MUCH improved. She isn't pee'ing as much and now there is no blood. So maybe the vinegar does help? I started her on the "real meds" too. She seems more comfortable today than she did yesterday, which is a relief.

I am glad Jazz's little baby sister is doing better.
I hope you are still taking her on Monday.
Plain yoghurt would probably be good for her now,especially with the antibiotics.
Do you have access to Pro bios paste for horses?
Any signs of upset stomach,diarrhea etc. will benefit from it.
When a dog is under the weather this stuff works like a charm.
I get it at a feed store.

I'll have to look for the pro bios, she did get yogurt this evening with her dinner, I got it this morning when I got the cranberry pills.

We are still going in Monday, she had an appt for then anyway for her rabies shot... I'm not sure I'll vaccinate her though. I get a little funny about giving vacines when there is already a compromised immune system due to infection. Paranoid I suppose, but there ya have it.

Standard poodles especially are known to have adverse reaction to rabies shot.
Stella,my grandspoo,developed a bump at the injection site,that has been there now for 3 years and the vet says she cannot have rabies shot again.
Gunther was sick for 2 weeks after rabies shot with poor appetite and enlarged lymp nodes.
I would certainly wait until Saleen aka Bean( I love that nickname) is back to 100%.

Well good, glad to know I'm not the only one who's leary of giving the vacine. They are going to do her last distemper parvo too.... I was already thinking of spliting that up into two sets, thats what we do with the tibbies. We ALWAYS vacinate for Rabies seperatly and at least a week apart from other shots. I didn't know that about poodles being sensative to the rabies.. Glad you mentioned it. I'm so used to thinking about the tibbies, we don't do lepto on them because of reactions are horribly common in the breed to that specific vacine. I just about fell off my chair when we had saleen done and she read off the vacination to me (after injecting it) and it included lepto. I had to remind myself that it wasn't a tibbie....

I'm soooo proud, Beanie hasn't had to potty in over an hour, though I don't want her to hold it (i've read that makes it worse) so off I go to let her outside lol.

Mandy cant have all her shots together either as she had a bad reaction last time when she was a pup She yelped for days after and had a fever and was lethargic. I had to stay home and watch her closely.
Glad she feeling better the cranberry and vinager really work. I give them both a pill when I think of it now just to be preventive as both of them think they are treats and go nuts when they see the bottle LOL
As for the vinager I will poor a bit in the water ever couple days as well now.

Oh you're lucky Mandy... I have to be sneaky to get the stuff down her lol. She really really hates the vinegar lol. She wont touch or even go near her food if I've added a tiny bit and she won't touch water that has it in there either. Thats going to present a real problem for me since I had been reading a month or so ago about ACV in their water being helpful in natural flea control and was going to add that to my flea fighting tool belt. I really want to try and get away from so many drugs and toxins, it's hard here though. That is actualy why I had a big gallon of the vinegar already.

She is now refusing to drink out of the bowl that had the vinegar water in it at all, even though there is NO vinegar in it and it's been washed. I only put a teaspoon in and it'sa big bowl... LoL, Guess it was enough for her! I have to fill syringes with it and make her take it that way. I've been having to poke the pills down her throat, though she did eat two of them today on her own so maybe that means she's deciding they aren't so bad.

She is feeling soooo much better, I'm thrilled. I was really worried that nothing would help or would only help a tiny bit and I wouldn't be able to get in at another clinic and be stuck for the weekend. Thankgoodness thats not the case! She actualy isn't pee'ing in the house at all now, and she doesnt have to go so often.
I was really worried about taking her to puppy class this morning but she did fine. She was in good spirits and didn't have any accidents. I'm sure she thought I was crazy though because I ran her outside every ten minutes or so because I didn't want her to think she needed to hold it.
