LOL as a standard owner I have no idea what the answer is to your question, I imagine it isn't very far they only have such tiny legs :rofl:
Toy Poodles and Walkies - what should I expect?
How long/far does your Toy Poodle like to walk?
I've mostly owned Labs in my life, and know very well that they LOVE to get out for walks and can literally go all day, and will have a huge grin on their face the whole time.
Now I've got a Toy Poodle and I'm wondering what I should be anticipating from him.
Now, are all you Standard owners rolling on the floor laughing? you are, aren't you? :tongue:

I own a Toy and a good run around the yard is tiring but I do take her for walks, I go maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a mile about twice a month. Like I said playing in the yard is just as fun!
lol....Im a Standard owner too, however, you'd be surprised how far some little dogs can go. I know you mentioned that you used to take long walks off trail and etc. If you are wanting to include the little one I would suggest getting a doggie back pack. When the toy gets tired just pop him in the back pack and keep going.
I saw a lady shopping at Target a while back with her yorkie in a back pack. It was actually quite nice. Nice mesh sides for air flow and pretty roomy. Her little Yorkie loved it.

Very bad subject to us, especially hubbie. We definately LOVE our dogs very much, but you know what, some people DO NOT like dogs at all, or possibly have algeries to dogs and etc. There are plenty of places that we can take our fury pets with us, and it is a ball taking them into pet stores, where they can actually pretty much let us know certain things that they like and dislike. But they DO NOT belong in a chain store, such as a Target. If a person can take a little doggie in Target, then what is to stop another from taking in their Rotties, shephards, and etc.? Who wants to buy a piece of clothing with dog hair on it or even worse buy food with hair on it, or what about the people that have algeries? Not a good idea. In fact it is illegal in the state of California to take pets into a store that sells food, unless it is a SERVICE DOG. The store has the right to ask a person to leave w/their dog and if they do not they can be fined a $500.00 fine.

When I take them in the woods thay all run on the path and the minis are the hardest ones to get back in! lolI walk the minis with the standards. I don't think they need to have shorter walks. - Cesar Milan says the small dogs need the walk just as much as the big ones.
We have poos in all sizes and almost all LOVE to go on walks other than just a normal "around the block to potty" walk!
When I get any new poodle I just start off slow like around the block and see if they enjoy it, if they do I walk a bit further the next time.
If I get to a point where they are lagging behind a bit or no longer seem interested in sniffing or looking for squirrels I just head home.
That is the great thing about toys...if they get tired you pick them up and carry them home! LOL
I would start off with around the block and not go to far over say 1/4 mile per day while your toy is under 6 months old...they tend to tire out very easy and you don't want them to get too tired!
Walks that are Shorter in length, but more frequent say 2-3 times per day is good to start with if you plan to really do some walking with your poodle.
I spend about 1/2 my day outside walking one or more dogs at a time...they all RUN to me when they hear the leash come out of the closet! I think that is why my guys seem so calm all the time, as Ceaser would say "a tired dog is a happy dog!"
No matter the size many poodles still have that hunting instinct and if you take them out and let them smell and see what is in their general area I personally think it makes them more assured of their home and family.
Not to mention that taking them out walking is a great opportunity to socialize and train them and for you to get healthy too...so, all in all walking is a great thing to do with any sized dog!

LoL, I can relate to that... sort of. It doesn't get that cold here in florida but this morning it is just above freezing :moneymouth: I don't do extreme cold LoL. Of course thats probably warm to some of your northern folks but WOW. Jazz wants to go for her morning walk, and is pestering me.... I don't have a toy poo but my tibbies are only a little larger than the average toy. They are around the block type of dogs.
When Sammy first came to live with us (2 1/2 weeks ago), he was 7 1/2 weeks old and it was about -15 C, but out we'd go to the backyard for him to do his business, all 2 1/4 lbs of him. He'd he shivering, but he'd go REALLY fast, we'd scoop him up, tuck him inside our coats and take him back inside...of course more than a dozen times a day. He got used to it in a few days though, no longer shivers, and even likes to stay out a bit a play in the snow.
He's a hearty little Canadian.
Actually, I've wondered if training him in the winter hasn't actually been a bonus. He gets out there and gets 'er done immediately, no goofing around.

My toy loves to walk, our walks usually consist walking TO the park
(not that far from our house) and then around the track at the
park a couple of times, he loves to go for walks and then tries
to run all the way home. :shot:

I walk my girls for a mile in the morning - round the streets and for about an hour on the meadows in the evening. The evening walk is off lead and they actually walk much further than we do as they dash about and explore and jump off things. I take them for 2 hours obedience training on a Thursday night and 2-3 hours agility on a Sunday morning. We also go to town to shop and the dogs can come with us into the pet store, the horse store and the craft store. If I'm up at the horses at noon, they will get an extra walk on the meadows.
