Hey

India is a bit shy of men even of the ones in the house. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do to help her overcome this fear?

She is a 10 week old standard poodle.

Thanks, Courtenay

Socialize... Socialize... Socialize

At 10 weeks, inherently shy temperament is a concerning thing in a Poodle. You are going to have to work on overcoming Nature with Nurture or your girl might grow up to be sharp shy.

I would have the men in your home hand feed the puppy. This is a pain and it is time consuming but it is very effective. Grab a chair... every bite of food in a meal comes from the hands of a man. Soon your girl will learn that the men in your family are the lunch truck and this is a good thing.

Out in public carry very high value treats: cut up steak, cheese, tube o' food etc. Stop strange men on the street and ask them to feed your girl a treat. Soon she will look forward to interacting with men.

You can also teach interaction like any other exercise:

Put your girl on a leash. Put her in a sit. Have a man come over and touch her once on her head. Click! Treat! Work up to being petted all over.

Teach "visit". Sit on a couch with dog on leash. Encourage her to touch her nose to the knee of a man. Click! Treat! Get her to the point where she will rest her chin on a man's knee.

One of my toy poodles was shy of men. She was well socialised and my husband was soppy about her. I found that she reacted to the gruff voices of men and it took a lot of persuasion to get my husband to raise his voice and use what we call the silly "Inky Binky" voice. I also used treats from the hands of passersby (men) and found that worked very well.

Cbrand's advice is perfect! Yes, it can be a pain but well worth it. If done consistently and right, Indy will be wanting to crawl into any man's lap..lol.

Good luck with your girl!

my girl is a bit unsure of herself around men too, though the ones that obviously adore her she likes. lol! She grew up in a caravan with an elderly lady though, and I have no idea what sort of socialising she got. at 3.5 years old she's pretty good for that upbringing really, and to be honest I'm not worried abot her being less enthusiastic about strange men....!

Poor little India! I agree Socialization is the key. Have her met as many men as she can in all kinds of environments. You don't want her to be just comfortable with men in the house and not anywhere else. Also don't forget to include woman and children too. A well socialized dog can be friendly with anyone, anywhere.

My Misa who is 12weeks loves people, maybe a little too much...LOL She is a Ham for sure and since there isn't many standards in my area she gets lots of attention for it.

Good luck, and work hard and India will come out of her shell.
