Seeking advice on responsible breeder

Hello,

I am grateful for this community and to have become part of it.

I am seeking a responsible toy poodle breeder dedicated to the health of the breed. Preferably in Southern California. I live in Orange County. A breeder whose objective is to raise dogs who are both physically and emotionally healthy. Who does not breed frequently, raises puppies in their home, and breeds healthy dogs. I would like to buy a female red toy poodle whom I will spay. The physical health and the temperament of the dog is of outmost importance for me. I am not planning to show or breed the dog, it will be my pet, but I want it to be up to breed standards.

I am hoping that this forum might point me in the right direction. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance!

There are several poodle clubs in your area - here are their names. Just google each one to get information on how to contact them:
Los Angeles Poodle Obedience Club
Poodle Club of Southern California
San Bernadino/Riverside Poodle Club
San Diego Poodle Club
Poodles and Pals of Southern California (poodle rescue only, I think)

This is the best way to start your search, I think.

I would contact Gail Zamora 530-268-3201. She’s located near Sacramento, but a puppy from her would be worth the drive. She could refer you to breeders she respects in your area if she has no planned litters.

You should also contact Mary Olund who is the western US breeder referral contact for PCA. Her contact info is in the link. https://www.poodleclubofamerica.org...le/breeder-referral/breeder-referral-contacts

Any feedback on Scarlet's Fancy Poodles?

Does anybody has experience with or know somebody who got a dog from Scarlet's Fancy Poodles located in Arroyo Grande in Central California? I am considering getting a red toy poodle from them.

Thank you.
I see lots of marketing gimicky stuff there that are turn offs. The pricing scale, the size scale etc. all are red flags to me. I think this is one of those cases where a good looking website can be a lure for people who don't have the experience to read between the lines.

Hi and Welcome!

When I was looking for my latest addition(s), I looked at a LOT of websites, regardless of whether they specialized in I was looking for.

After a while, you start to see the similarities and differences in what is featured (and missing) on the sites and you can start to discern who is more, let's call it committed to the breed, vs committed to breeding. I learned to steer away from the ones that didn't offer clear verifiable facts re the poodles in their care. Some examples are: health testing results will be available, contracts will be required between you both, references will be required (and make sure they actually contact your references!). You'll get the feel for who's just "happy happy buy my puppies" and who is doing it for love of the breed.

Don't hesitate to contact several to get a feel for what they find important. The more you ask, the more you learn to ask.

This search for our beloved companions seems to be a much harder road than it was years ago, and it can be daunting, but will be so rewarding when you find the right one.

Wishing you all the best

Just saw Verve's post on the other thread-excellent info!

Thank you very much for the useful info!
Two people on this thread recommended Gail Zamora's red toy poodles. I spoke to her and she has puppies available. What do you think of her breeding program? I think I am pretty much set on getting a dog from her but would like to see if anybody had any negative experiences with her dogs? Thanks again!

While I haven't direct exposure to her breeding program, I've read a bit, and would surely talk with her if I were looking for a puppy in the next year. I've had chats with her people, probably a family member, at their bench at GGKC in past years, and they've been lovely to me, and the Tpoos quite precious and clearly well cared for and content.

You should plan to attend the huge show in January that used to be in Palm Springs and now is in a different area, not that far away, but the name escapes me at the moment. Look on infodog.com at Cali shows end of January and you'll find it. Any probs, reply here and hopefully I'll see it and get you more info. That show nearer you has a much larger overall entry than GGKC, and they are usually the same weekend. Though I think the one south is a cluster that goes more than two days. Might even catch a specialty-I've no idea.

I would like to thank you all who answered the questions in my thread. I got a red toy girl poodle from Gail Zamora. I am so happy with my choice. Gail was full of information. I respect and admire how she treats the dogs she breeds. She was very helpful through the process and I learned so much from her. I have had a puppy for a month now - GiGi. GiGi has a great personality and she is a healthy happy puppy. I am very glad I got her from Gail Zamora. Thank you Gail and thank you all!!
