When you go to registered your poodle you can do so either via the paperwork with the breeder OR you can do it online with the pin number on the paperwork. If you do it on the paper the color choices that you can registered are rather limited, but I red IS one of them. I you complete your registration online there are tons more colors listed included parti's and phantoms... I found that interesting.

I always understood the breed standard to say that solid clear colors were acceptable.

Somewhere along the line poodle fanciers had to have decided that they liked solid colors best. It is my (limited) understanding that the rising popularity of parti colors is a more reccent thing... say in the last 5-10 years some breeders have been trying to "bring them back" ? I could very easily be off LoL, I'm not ths expert in poodle color history :)

Also there isnt a option to describe if your dog is a parti. All you can put is what best describes your dog. And yes, no parti poodles allowed in conformation events, just events like obedience and agility.
Yes you can register with AKC as a parti, you just can't do it on the written/printed reg. paperwork that you send in. With Saleen I used the AKC's new online registration and when I got to the part where I specified her color there were tons more choices included partis and phantoms. I was surprised.
