I don't know if there was a discussion about this already... if there was... I apologize....
I was on the AKC website and looked at the breed standard for poodles... it does not mention the color red as being one of the colors accepted for the breed standard.
For some reason I thought I read somewhere that red is now being accepted - is this true - or am I day dreaming again???

When you go to registered your poodle you can do so either via the paperwork with the breeder OR you can do it online with the pin number on the paperwork. If you do it on the paper the color choices that you can registered are rather limited, but I red IS one of them. I you complete your registration online there are tons more colors listed included parti's and phantoms... I found that interesting.

I always understood the breed standard to say that solid clear colors were acceptable.

My understanding is the same as Wunderpup's. Only solid, clear colors are recognized by the AKC.

I always wonder how they got to that when foundation poodles included parties. :questionmark:

Somewhere along the line poodle fanciers had to have decided that they liked solid colors best. It is my (limited) understanding that the rising popularity of parti colors is a more reccent thing... say in the last 5-10 years some breeders have been trying to "bring them back" ? I could very easily be off LoL, I'm not ths expert in poodle color history :)

Reds are accepted as a dark variation of Apricot and I believe post are registered as Apricot.

When I registered my Parti Girl I just check off Cafe Au Lait since they don't accept Partis for breed showing its not important to specify if the dog is of broken color. They just need to know the base color.

From what I have read when the breed was imported to American they only brought solid colored dogs over and with the Partis being rare in the beginning most spotted pups were culled and not spoken of. There are quite a few breeds who have more colors then what the standard allows, like Shar Pei can come in bi color but can not be "shown" in AKC and many breeders won't admit to have spotted pups and just cull or pet out the pups.

Got bit by the bug!!!! and went on a research rampage.... check out this website I found with a little bit of history on the parti poodles.
http://www.caninehorizons.com/Parti_Poodle_History.html

It's like society goes through dog breed phases... not to long ago the doberman was a big hit... and every jack and their mother had to have a dobe.
It kinda seems like it's the hybrid/designer or what ever they call it now breeds that gets all the attention now?!?!?!

So, what your saying Wonderpup is that you can register a red or parti... but doesn't mean that you can show them in confirmation... it states on the breed standard that parties are disqualified?!?!?!
(Sorry... I'm new to this AKC business)

OK... so you can register any color the breed comes in (or that they have listed)... but not show all the colors that you can register (if I have this right)...which brings me to my next question... can you show - for breed - red poodles? (if it's a dark red - and clearly not apricot)

That is my understanding, I am no expert either. ;)

We would not be able to show Enzo if they did not allow reds :D There are PLENTY of red toy champions and Miniatures !

Only Red Standard poodles are the ones that are hardest to finish due to Lack of quality. There are only 4 red standard poodles who are CH. Hopefully Enzo would be the 5th

ROXY, are you talking about AKC or UKC? I think you are referring to AKC but I know you are showing Enzo in the UKC right now.

I am starting Billy out in the AKC because there aren't enough UKC shows around here for me to ever get him finished in. I sure am nervous about our show on June 12th.

I am talking about AKC

The fourth Red standard poodle just won in Januaray I think she is not listed on the club website ( I don't think they update often)

Here is the 4th AKC red standard poodle to win CH status
http://www.poodlecluboflasvegas.org/litters.html

She is the second bitch to win AKC ch title her sister Raquel might become 5th but I have not seen her out in local shows since Long beach 08 ( she might also be out of state but not sure )

I am not sure about UKC but in AKC reds are registered as REDS not apricot.

In UKC they are registered as REDS. There is no difference between AKC and UKC when it comes to solid colors of poodles. On Enzos registration for UKC he is listed as a red.

Color wise, red and apricot are both an option when registering your poodle. Also there isnt a option to describe if your dog is a parti. All you can put is what best describes your dog. And yes, no parti poodles allowed in conformation events, just events like obedience and agility.

Ooops, I think you guys covered the red question before I wrote my responce. lol
