Hi everyone,

I will be bringing home a Standard poodle puppy in 2 weeks. He is brown. His mother is a faded brown. She is 3 years old. His father is pure black. The mother's parents were blue and brown. I'm wondering if my puppy will fade less than his mother due to the fact that his father is pure black and his pedigree shows almost all black or brown 10 generations back. Or will he more or less be the same color as his mother? Can you breed out the fading gene or is it there to stay? Just wondering. Thanks in advance to all that respond.

I have only seen standard who kept his dark chocolate color as an adult. Most I've ever seen fade, that's just the way it is. Chocolates, reds, apricots, blacks - they all fade to certain degree. The only ones who don't get lighter are whites, but they can get darker/dirtier. ;)

LOL... Hmmmm.... so whites don't fade, darn, and I thought they did, boy, I need to learn all this stuff. :pound:

Seriously, that is the one thing that is cool and bad about the poodles. I think it is neat to watch a poodle clear to blue or silver, but would be nice if a nice apricot would stay that way throughout life. But, I don't love mine because of their color so may find it neat to have a "new" dog every so often...lol.

Before asking about and reading about colours on here I didn't even know poodles faded! I find it fascinating. Does anyone know of any websites that can go into a bit more about this fading gene, like a before and after for the different colours?

Now there's a question for jester's mom. She has done a great deal of research on the internet about the fading gene.
