At the end of the month I'll be driving to pick up my new baby from Danube poodles in Tennessee and I'm so excited! I feel so anxious about making sure I have everything I need. His name will be Misha. I don't know which puppy it will be yet since there are three boys and the breeder pairs puppies with homes based on fit, but they all look great so I know I will get a stellar pup. Two black and one brown boy, so could be either color. I feel like my head will explode with ideas of everything I want to make sure I do right with this puppy. Not asking for any particular advice... just need to share because I know many have been here before.

How exciting for you! You will do just fine. How long will the drive home with him be? Make sure you leave plenty of potty stop opportunities and take some paper towels and garbage bags in case there are any oopsies along the way. Make sure you don't put the pup down in areas that seem to be heavily trafficked by other dogs and don't let your pup drink from puddles or any communal water sources. I would actually take a couple of empty jugs and ask the breeder for some of her household water if that is what the pups are used to drinking.

Great ideas. It will be about 12 hours but will be split in two days, and I'll have a partner to help drive. I will bring the jugs for sure!

One more thing you might do is bring a blanket or a couple of towels you could use as bedding for the pup. Rub them on mom and any other pups still there so your pup can get comfort from familiar smells.

That is such an exciting time. You have a long drive. I love brown poodles but black is striking too, so either way, it's a win.

When I picked up my Doberman puppy in Montana when I lived in Idaho, it was about a 5 hour drive. So not nearly as far. I do not like rest stops for letting dogs out. There are just too many dogs that pass through those places. So I stopped at a little gas station/convenience store on a sort of county road that was the highway. There was a nice grassy place with trees out back...lots of property and I asked if I could let my puppy out to go potty. She advised me to go to another town way further along because there was a parvo outbreak around there. So she then gave me some sanitizer spray stuff to spray on my shoes and when still in my car, handed her the bottle...something to clean the bathroom with. Anyhow, I moved on and stopped along side the highway...and walked up a hill where it was doubtful any dogs had probably been...at least not likely...off the beaten path.

When I got my poodle puppies, the breeder was only 20 minutes away. lol.

So, my point with all that is be very careful where you let your pup out to potty. I'd steer clear of rest stops (I do even when they're adults)...dog parks, anyplace where there are likely lots of dogs that have been through. Odds are higher for disease that way. I use to stop at a people park that was really cool between my place in Idaho and my then home north of Seattle. By this time they were adults. It was a huge grassy place and sure there were some dogs that went there, but mostly it was for people. That was a kind of place that was relatively safe for dogs but I still wouldn't take an 8 week old pup there.

So, good luck. Do you have a list of all the stuff you've bought? Crates? Xpen, brushes? What all have you accumulated so far? lol.

Good advice, thank you! I think the puppies are used to using potty pads, so we may be able to be safe and not need to let the puppy out to potty. But if that won't work then yeah I will be super careful to find areas without much traffic.

I have a lot of stuff haha. Crate, xpen, slicker brush, steel comb, leash, collar, tags, mat for flooring of xpen, potty pads with one of those safety holders to prevent them chewing the pads, water bowl, and an assortment of toys. The pups are on raw, but we conveniently have a raw distributor in our city so I plan to visit them and make sure I have everything I need for food. Planning to order a bravura for trimming as well.

Oh yippie! It sounds like you're all set pretty much. Reading through your list put a smile on my face...remembering how fun that part of the anticipation can be. Good luck on your trip. Can't wait to see your pup. :)

I know how you feel, we picked up our gorgeous fur baby nearly two weeks ago. I was exited and anxious too although we had done the same thing two years ago. I planned as much as possible while I was waiting four weeks to collect her, we even cancelled a planned holiday as she was ready to come to her new home at the same time, although the breeder offered to keep her for an extra few days I could not wait.
I took water and a portable dish and gave her some dry food provided by the breeder on the journey home. Enjoy your planning and collection.

Oh I was very close to getting on the list for your litter! But I wasn’t sure about the timing for us. (Turns out it would have been fine.) I am so jealous.
I'm sure you'll get a great puppy as well! There are so many great breeders and it was hard to choose. But the timing was actually a huge plus for me with this litter because I work in academia and this gives me the summer to spend lots of time with the puppy. It can be so hard to work things around busy schedules!

Wow, if the pups are on raw you must be using an excellent breeder. Would you be willing to share the name with me in a PM?

How exciting to be so near the pick up date! I am happy for you and your new pup!

When I got my pom puppy it was about a 3 hour drive. I brought some pee pads and when he started getting wiggly I just put the pee pad down by my feet (I was passenger) and plopped puppy down and he pottied as we drove. One time he peed, one time he pooped. Never had to let him out anywhere. :)
