It is cockerpoo land here. Mind you I think Rusty may be part something other than poodle. No problem though. I often get asked what he is crossed with. He is in an all over same length cut so could be part of the reason.

Sorry you have come across so many rude idiots.
I think whatever coat she winds up in, I'm leaving her head and back of neck poofy, just to emphasize that she's a poodle. After the third, "so is she something like a poodle..." No. She IS a poodle. No ambiguity about it.

I get quite a few people that think Loki is a doodle. Most of them didn't know Standard Poodles exist. He has a shaved face, fluffy ears and tail, and a top know so it is pretty obvious he is a poodle. Oddly enough, no one has ever questioned why he needs training classes (might have something to do with the fact we have failed the CGC twice due to jumping)
I have never heard they are aggressive. I did have a child make fun of his fluffy tail, but most everyone else things he is beautiful.
I did have someone chase me down the other day because she wanted to know more about my poodle because she is thinking about getting one. At least she knew it was a poodle.

I've had dog sports people at lure-coursing sessions look down at my mini-poodle - until they saw how fast and focused he was. They warmed up to us after his first run. I think our current nosework trainer may have tried to not like Topper till he saw the dog's drive and joy at solving the scent puzzle. Few people understand that he's a retriever in a cute 11-pound package.

So I've checked with all of the trainers locally. One is out of business. One charges $950 for their obedience class. And everyone else is no longer doing obedience classes or puppy classes at all. Everyone is doing specialty training only. They are training hunting dogs or search and rescue or guard dogs. That's all. Anyone else is minimum an hour drive away 40-60 miles one way. So I'm going to have to continue training her at home. I doubt we will get her CGC without a trainer evaluating.
DH wanted to know why bother with all the certificates, etc. I don't have a good answer that would justify the driving and expense.

I've gotten a lot of the people who didn't know there were standards. I've mentioned before the most ridiculous.

"Is that like a poodle mixed with a Doberman?"
"That's a bearded collie, right?"
Oh my word. I guess that answers the question of where do they think doodles come from if not from standard poodles?

Normie's a mini (with a sports clip) so some people think he's still a Goldendoodle puppy. But mostly I hear from doodle owners who hope that Normie is the same mix as their dog. We met a Cavapoo pup last week and the owners were hoping she would grow up to look like Normie.

No one's ever challenged me for choosing a poodle. And frankly, their dogs like their crabgrass are not my problem.

Have you looked at Spirit Dog training online? Several of us have done her classes.

Occasionally, their dogs become my problem. "Oh, he doesn't mean any harm. He just likes to run." Well... When your dog goes for my chickens, you get a capture and return with a friendly warning. If your dog shows up again, the warning is a bit sterner. 3rd time, I call the cops and give them footage. Enjoy your ticket. That's if Frannie doesn't run your dog off first. Not a day goes by that someone doesn't post about a roaming dog in town. Most avoid my house because of Frannie's welcome. And yet, dog training is only for those doing specialties. 馃檮

it sounds like the people you meet are a little envious of your Normie. That's a compliment in my book! 馃榿

well. Here is my experience in the Dog park.

one old ladies group came to the park and ask "what kind of dog is it? " I told them "he is a poodle." they all said "we've never seen a poodle at this height. is he mixed with something?" I told them "he is purebred."

The irony of the situation is those ladies holding 2 big doodles and asking how poodles grow this big.. lol. just you know just ignore those stupid comments. I think your community is not well updated with the world.

All I can say is If you own a poodle, you are different than most people.

I鈥檓 really impressed that you followed your heart and got the poodle you wanted despite all the negativity around you. You and Phoebe are going to be just fine.

Maybe you should just embrace her poodleness and grow out her topknot and bracelets and let your poodle flag fly! You don鈥檛 need to answer to anyone - just enjoy your beautiful dog馃榾

The town we moved to prides itself on not having changed much since 1950. We moved from one of the largest cities in the country to a small coal mining town in the middle of the state forest. So your assessment of it not being updated is spot on. We are fish out of water.

Thank you for the kind words. I didn't want a regular dog, and I can easily say that life with Phoebe will never be boring!

I'm tempted to do just that ... It depends, though, on what she gets into. I do want her to look unapologetically Poodle. I'm just glad DH was willing to go with a dog that wasn't to his normal taste. He's glad too

I may have missed it earlier, but what part of the country do you live in? Happy traveled extensively up and down the east coast and now lives in Korea. She's never received anything but adoration. The three people who expressed negative attitudes to me about poodles were all people I know. That's before they got to know Happy - now they adoring fans! Let the Poodle haters hate. It sucks to be them. Sorry to hear you're going through this. P-Duck is awesome!

North Central PA. I'm (roughly) 4 hrs from Harrisburg, 4 hrs from Pittsburgh, 4 hrs from Philly, 6 hrs from NYC, you get the idea. I had shock from my mom (back home in TX) when I said I wanted a poodle, but she went with my preference and gifted me Phoebe. DH was confused but game for it. He knew nothing about the breed. I get negativity from people that have never met Phoebe. I get confusion from people that meet her on our field trips. (She's not a doodle?) It's family that doesn't "get" the dog shows or why you would spend money to get a dog from a reputable breeder.
