i found this glossary of poodle colours

White
white poodles range from a brilliant snowy white to a creamy softer white.

Cream the coat of a cream poodle is a golden or off-white colour. Some cream poodles have tinges of white in their coat. Some breeders may refer to Ò£hampagneÒ as a variation of the cream colour, which is a previously recognised colour of the Kennel Club.

Apricot as its name suggests the apricot poodle is an orangey, deep golden colour, ranging from lighter hues to stronger, more pronounced colour.

Red the red-heads of the breed ranges from a deep reddish orange tinge through to a warm and rich mahogany colour. It is possible to get a combination of both apricot and red poodles.

Brown a brown poodle is dark brown, almost black. The brown is a rich shade of intense colour.

Café lait translated from French as silky coffee's this is exactly the effect the cafe lait poodle's coat has. It comes as a diluted form of a pure brown poodle.

Silver beige this colour is a dilution of brown with a silvery tinge. A silver beige poodle will have a silver coloured face and feet.

Black the black poodle is coloured a deep, dark and intense black with no other colours in the coat.

Blue an eye-catching colour that is similar to black, but with blue tones and is almost metallic in some lights. Blue poodle puppies are born black with brown highlights and turn blue by the age of two.

Silver A silver poodle puppy is born black and eventually changes to a shiny greyish silver colour.

A "Parti Poodle” is basically a white dog with broken patches of color.

Every Parti is marked differently in both the color pattern and pigment. This feature makes them all the more unusual.

They are found in the black/tan, black/silver, brown/tan combinations and are marked in a precision pattern.

Phantom poodles are bi-colored, with the same markings as a Doberman. That is, they have a lighter color appearing on their "eyebrows," muzzle and throat, legs and feet and below their tail.

Black can be combined with apricot, brown, cream, gray, red and silver.

Brown and red can both be combined with apricot.

Abstract Poodles (Mismark)

These poodles are less than fifty percent white, with the remaining percent of any other acceptable solid color.

Tuxedo Poodles

These Tuxedos poodles will usually have a white bib that may or may not go all the way around the neck, and they have an all white belly.

The white will usually extend from the elbows down to the feet and from the hock to the rear foot. However, you can have some variation in this with one or two legs not having any white at all.

Some of them have markings in the head and some not.

Sable

A poodle coat identified by black-tipped hairs on a background of any solid color, with no particular pattern or location designated for such hairs.

Merle Poodles

It is a color that I would highly recommend staying away from. This gene has not been found carried by the poodles. I think this was introduced via another breed dog.

i found this info on a site thought i would share

Thanks for the color run-down. My mini is still black but has shoots of silver coming onto his back. He is registered as blue, but at only 8 months, no one can tell. Everyone looks at me like I'm crazy and says "he's black."

As long as we're on subject of color, I love the whites. My husband says they would be too hard to keep clean and look nice-anyone with whites care to give an opinion?

with the little white hairs on him I think they refer to this as a "bad black". There are a couple of them on here(not sure who at the moment).

As far as whites go???????

The sable is beautiful!
I have a white/cream poodle (toy mix lookes like a poodle) The problem I have with him is keeping under his eyes clean. the tear stains are a pain. Maybe they wouldn't be on a standard? But as far as the coat I bathe him every week or 2 or if he's smelly and I have not had problems keeping him 'white' He's older now and has darkened down his back but will brighten up after a wash but the darker cream/apricot is still there down his back now and on his ears. He was mostly white/cream from birth till this last year or so. He's almost 8.

I am confused...Are you saying my poo will be sable and not a blue?
No, your poo will not be a sable! This thread was talking about all the different colors and so I thought I would post pics of this beautiful Sable one!!

Dont quote me but I think your guy is a "bad black" or possibly a blue????????

Good site-thanks! Yes-mine is blue...he definitely has a brownish suede cast to his coat-and it is very thick and beautiful. Will be interesting to see how it turns out when he is 2 yrs. old.

probably due to the fading gene

Sable poodles are like sable havanese, they fade so much that they practically become cream. Although I've seen some Havanese that get some of their color back as they get older, it's really amazing to watch.

The sable is fascinating! Thank you for the two sites on colors. It can be very handy. It's interesting that there many poodles registered colors are not what they turned out to be when they matured. They seem to always have us guessing.
