Good news!!! Yesterday the House passed the PACT Act (Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act) into Federal law....but now we need the Senate's vote and the President's signature................. It is expected to pass quickly, what do YOU think?

I only took a very quick look, but I think it seems a bit strange as it specifically refers to "animal crushing" and making and distributing videos that show such acts in my quick overview.

Here is a link to the text of the bill. https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/724/text While I certainly think animal cruelty should be criminalized I am not sure what this will do if the definitions of what this bill are concerned with is just "crushing." We could certainly apply many other terms and describe many other actions that would be cruel and tortorous. Have I missed something?

Is animal crushing a front page or even a kitchen table issue? I haven’t heard of this sick practice. Completely agree that it is an oddly, narrow definition of animal cruelty and torture. Waste of a Bill, IMHO.

Passed in the House.

On it's way to... . . The Grim Reaper. Muahaha!

Best of luck, animal friends. :)

So Frank do you north of the border types think we are all insane? I sure wonder about how we are seen in the world these days...

And Mfmst I don't know a thing about crushing animals either. If it happens a lot it should be stopped, but think about the part that says it is okay to do it if it is part of euthanasia. I think there should be criminal penalties for abusing animals, but wonder how enforceable such laws can be when we seem collectively (globally) to have apparent tolerance for torturing and abusing each other.

How about doing something on prescription drug prices instead??????????

Sometimes they pass legislation with the intention of adding more, tightening up. If this passes it may open the door for animal cruelty of any kind to be a federal offense. As a Federal offense, each state's laws would only be followed if they were tougher than the Federal.

I think we can all get behind anti-animal crushing. Legislation needs to be more comprehensive than just this weird never-heard-of cruelty. I apologize, if crushing is an issue in your community. I would welcome the background.

Thanks for the link Catherine.

Here's further down the bill

“(f) Definitions.—In this section—
“(1) the term ‘animal crushing’ means actual conduct in which one or more living non-human mammals, birds, reptiles, or amphibians is purposely crushed, burned, drowned, suffocated, impaled, or otherwise subjected to serious bodily injury (as defined in section 1365 and including conduct that, if committed against a person and in the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States, would violate section 2241 or 2242);
“(2) the term ‘animal crush video’ means any photograph, motion-picture film, video or digital recording, or electronic image that—
“(A) depicts animal crushing; and
“(B) is obscene; and
“(3) the term ‘euthanizing an animal’ means the humane destruction of an animal accomplished by a method that—
“(A) produces rapid unconsciousness and subsequent death without evidence of pain or distress; or
“(B) uses anesthesia produced by an agent that causes painless loss of consciousness and subsequent death.”.

Still, how very odd to word it the way it is.

Thank you for posting this so it gives a little clarity...........why do they write things where you have to dig for the real meanings?

The next step is getting this passed and then signed by the POTUS............. It is going to depend on the people who wrote it, and if the POTUS has them on his 'hit list' just for spite!!! Or perhaps he will be magnanimous and claim he has saved millions of animals with his very own little hands HAHAHA!
:deal: or no deal? :nono:

I googled "animal crushing" and it does not refer to just crushing an animal. It is a term used for extreme torture of animals by any method. "Crush videos" are sold as porn.

Learn something every day, just maybe not something you really wanted to know.

Yeah, reraven, the stuff you don’t want to know. Crushing should be an item in the bill, but they are missing, fighting, abandonment, overbreeding, starvation...The list goes on and on, including animal porn to cover stuff you never considered:(

Never heard the term animal crushing either, or that it is a broader term encompassing many types of animal cruelty. Ugh.
