December 16th my Grandma passed away. My family lives in Michigan and I live in North Carolina, so it was quite the trip, and I couldn't get a reasonably priced flight until Christmas eve, and I was going to stay until January 4th. Willow was midway through her heat cycle and Jamie was just coming in. My husband was to stay home while I went to Michigan to visit with family.
Well, around the first (im not absolutely sure on the date because I really had alot going on) he called me and said that Brian had "got" Jamie.
he's pretty lucky I was 800 miles away because I could have killed him right then and there.

I asked him why, and how, and are you sure over and over, I was just in total disbelief.
Jamie is going to be 2 in May, and Brian will be 2 in June. I did not want this AT ALL! I have worked so hard in the past 2 years to build a responsible breeding and exhibiting program and one stupid move just about ruins it.

When I got home and could finally face any forums I read about Taffy and Billy's close call, it was too early in Jamie's possible pregnancy to say yea or nay, so I kept it to myself until now.

Seriously this has been eating me up inside. I work at a vet office, and have been pestering our small animal vet (who also trains and breeds working shepherds) about everything to do with pregnancy.

The day Richard told me, I told him to ask the vet about the "mis-mate" shot....apparently it can harm/KILL the mother dog??? Our vet said she could spay Jamie, but its honestly not an option.

I have already decided to get all possible testing before any potential puppies arrive or go to new homes(depending on how long the results take)

Jamies hips will be done when she turns 2 as will Brian's

Jamie will go to the vet this week to get an ultrasound to confirm/deny pregnancy. Brian Will be boarded whenever ANY of my bitches are in heat, and whenever I leave town in the future..

She does appear to be pregnant physically. I have also noticed that she is becoming more clingy, whereas before she was the most independent poodle of the group, and really appeared to not like me. :eek:hwell:

I feel like absolute crap, I wanted so much more for her, I think I would be more accepting of my child coming home pregnant than I am of this.

I have been scurrying around getting everything I *may* need (and probally alot I don't) and doing TONS of reading.

I just wanted to let everyone know, please keep my poor Jamie in your thoughts and if you are the praying type, your prayers, that she does well.

Hey Amber,

Get your hubby out of the dog house, I am sure he did his best. When you have females in heat and intact male, thing can/will happen. If Jamie is pregnant, I hope she has an uncomplicated pregnancy and easy delivery.

Ehh I say keep him in the dog house for a wee little bit, it's what I know I would do! Sh*t happens, this was not delibrate it's life, STOP beating yourself up (I know easier said then done) Luckily the forum folks know you better - AND you have a future plan of action - period. They could have been much younger, you know:eek:hwell:

Just breath and lastly I SURE HOPE THE COMMENT ABOUT YOUR CHILD COMING HOME PREGNANT WAS A LIGHT HEARTED JOKE! :fish:

Hang in there!:)

oh boy .... :smow:

But I can only say what everybody else said - thing are bound to "happen" with bitch in heat and any male in proximity whenever full attention "slips" even for a minute.

I am so sorry : (. Take your hubby out of the "doghouse" - I am sure he did the best he could or knew . He had a very hard task - TRUST ME LMAO !!!!!

Board Brian next time - or make a separate "bachelor pad" for him at your property ; )

I wish you the best of luck with everything !!!!

Life happens - don't beat yourself (or your husband) up over it. My second poodle Lexie is an "oops" dog - the owner of Lexie's Mom had just got her from a rescue group and had been told the bitch was spayed. A friend brought his champion male over for "babysitting" while he went on a trip. Oops . .. quickly figured out that Lexie's Mom was NOT spayed. LOL

But, hey . . . . .I got a beautiful dog.

Hang in there. It'll all work out. I'm a firm believer in things happening for a reason.

I think maybe your husband would have been a little more conscientious if things hadn't been upside down because of what was going on in your family. I am so very sorry to hear about your Grandma. Things happen, and life will return to normal. Your girl will be fine. It isn't like she is nine months old. And you can get her tested prior to the puppies leaving. It is the school of hard knocks. Now you know you need to board your boy out, or get someone to look after him so there will be no more accidents. Everything will be fine. Don't fret!!

OH stuff happens, it's not that big a deal so don't be too hard on the hubby. You are going to do the testing and you have a 2 year old mom so I think things will be okay if she's pregnant. Keep us updated.

You can't beat yourself up, or your husband up over things like this. It happens. Even when dogs are seperated they know what's going on.. I groomed a bitch in heat today, then groomed an intacted male afterwards, and BOY was he interested in how I smelled! I'm sure you'll be prepared should your girl have her pups.

Well in my opinion :) I think you SHOULD keep him in the doghouse or any other house that you can fit him in and lock the door LMAO!!!:eek:hwell: Then I think you should tak Brian to stay in his own pad while they are in season again.... Actaully, I think you woul dhave more luck if you sent RICHARD to a kennel while your bitches are in season LMAO!!! You would have more luck keeping them apart LMAO!! :bird: You could always send Brian here, wait, nope I am moving to Hawaii! You could send him out there!!!!! I mean, from what I am hearing, he will make a killing in show since he would probably be like the only Spoo being shown LOL!! Ok, enough kidding aside, you are going to be ok, Jamie is going to be ok and Brian is going to produce some beautiful pups! Richard on the other hand, keep him right where he is lol, he needs to be punished LMAO! Ok, Jamie's I am so proud you you little momma, and I would LOVE to have one of her pups if I was not moving! Sorry for the percocet rant loL! Amber call me in the morning!

What everyone else said! Don't beat yourself up. What is done is done, and you never know, one of her puppies could end up being president one day. :D

*hugs*

Thanks all. Richard will remain in the doghouse a little longer. We had planned on putting Brian up at the kennel at work when bitches were in heat, because the last time his carrying on was BAD. This Is Jamie's second heat, and the barking and whining was even worse. In fact Brian did spend one night at the kennel... but then for some unknown reason he was brought home.
Im going to try to get an ultrasound done today.
Jamie is soaking up all our concern, and soliciting attention wherever she can. here is a picture of her snoozing in her crate today... If its a false pregnancy, LOL its an awful big one.

as much as I was disapointed, Im am really excited to see what they have!

She is due around March 5th if Richard told me the right date.

Well, as we know, crap happens. I hope that your ultrasound shows 'no pups' like Spoo's Taffy did. We were so glad and relieved when the vet said no pups to be seen but one "could" be hiding but she thought not, and Taffy's due date came and went with no pups! Bagged, milk, lethargy towards the end, distended looking belly, temp fluctuations at the end with temp drop... but no pups. :) :) Right after her due date, she was like a different dog, all bouncy, full of excitement, bags going away.... funny how the body can trick the mind...lol.

So, sending vibes your way that things work out that she didn't take and you can proceed with your original plans!

But, Good luck either way!!!

OK...from one who has been there. Do stop beating yourself up and forgive hubby. You had the same situation we had when it happened with Taffy and Billy. You can't be monitoring your dogs diligently and dealing with a death in the family at the same time. It will be easier for all if you work together on this.

We, too, have decided that Taffy will go to Dianne's during her future heats. Hard lesson learned and did all the things you are doing.

You are being responsible by doing all of the right things; which makes you a responsible breeder not a byb.

If she turns out to be pregnant, you'll be ready and you'll love them!! You will find them wonderful, forever homes. And, you have a plan for the future. Put it behind you, take what you learned from it and move forward.

Wishing you the best and please let us know how it goes!

Spoosprit, you (and everyone else) are right.
I am just the tiniest bit excited though, and I think that is what I feel bad about- being excited. At the same time I am a little overwhelmed because I have just SO MUCH to do still LOL.
We are deciding tonight if we are going to buy a prefab whelping box or if we will build one.
in the next two weeks I am going to be getting all the tests that She can have done without having to go to a strange vets office.
Cerf will wait until after she whelps and hips will be done in may.

i am in better spirits about the whole thing in general.

So happy to hear it. I understand about your feeling a bit excited! You shouldn't feel guilty about being a bit excited; we were too. Since you cannot do anything about it, why not enjoy the experience. It isn't a crime.

Sounds like your moving right along with you plans. Best to you all.
