No More Puppy License

Poor Galen. His puppy license seems to have expired with no warning this week. Yesterday he jumped on his friend Coco just like he always does. This time instead of playing she rolled him and snarled. Today I gave him and Pogo each a Yakky stick. He went over to steal Pogo's treat, just like he always does. This time, instead of letting him have it, Pogo gave an angry bark and took the stick away to a dog bed. Sorry little dude, I guess nobody thinks you're cute anymore. Growing up is hard.

He just turned five months, and he's 33 pounds.

How big is Galen supposed to get? Poor Galen life's just not fair.
Nice to have an older dog who will teach puppy manners!

Poor Galen. The little guy's still got his puppy fluff! And maybe even his puppy teeth! His puppy pass should have at least another month or two on it.
I'm sorry that Galen lost his puppy license so soon 😞 but we still think he's cute! So he hasn't lost his puppy license with us😀

His breeder thought he'd end up around 50 pounds. He was the runt of his litter, so I was expecting him to end up smaller. However, he seems to have stolen enough of Pogo's dinners to catch up.

Have you tried this calculator?

It nailed Peggy's weight.

Pogo has been a superb foster dad. Early on he did a few smack downs to keep the pup from biting his face while he was sitting on the couch. Apart from that he has been far more gentle and patient than I would have been if I were stuck babysitting a toothy little monster.

I tried it a few weeks ago; it said 44 pounds then. Today it says 46.5 pounds.

That's similar to the range I got for Peggy (46-48ish, depending on the week) and she was 44.2 lbs at one year. She's still filling out a little, but her height hasn't changed in months.
I just checked her weight chart (yes, my husband and I are big dorks) and she was 32.4 lbs at 5 months.

Galen and Peggy would have been good puppy playmates!

It's funny. When we got Pogo we really wanted a moyen. I ended up with a 26 inch 70 pound dog because I didn't like any moyen breeders I found . Now I'm accustomed to Pogo's size and kind of like it. So, of course we end up with a significantly smaller dog.

Ha! Relatable. When I got my tiny Gracie, I actually had my heart set on a big dog. And when we got Peggy, I quietly wished she'd stop growing at 30 lbs.

Now I don't even know anymore if I'm a big dog person or a small dog person.

I guess I'm just a "whatever dog I've got" person.
I love that poodles come in different sizes. Small, Regular, and Large? Like a detergent? But more fun.

It's always useful to have an older dog who can teach a puppy some manners. This especially is true for puppy biting. An older dog can stop that much faster than a human can!

Losing his puppy license with Peeves was one of Javelin's saddest experiences in his life. Javvy used to grab Peeves by the tail and take sleigh rides wiht Peeves pulling him along, cute when he was a pipsqueek, but not at any point after about 20 pounds. Javvy had a hard time understanding why his pal didn't go along anymore and did not understand the license had expired. They have had some less than stellar interactions in the years since, culminating now with oldster Peeves now having let Javvy be the top boy. Javvy doesn't seem to understand he doesn't need to assert the rank. He just has it so now rather than Peeves jurting Javvy I worry about Javvy hurting Peeves at this point. They are not good together alone. Lily is the bitch queen (behind me of course) and everyone knows it among the dogs.

Pogo was dominant over Snarky, but not in an aggressive way. He just had more confidence and more work ethic. Snarky, who tended to be a bit timid and lazy, was usually happy to let Pogo set the tone of the household. On the rare occasions when Snarky did care about something Pogo was usually willing to back off. I hope we get an equally harmonious relationship this time around.
