Warning – long post!
Last week, I decided it was time to add a new poodle puppy to our family. I’d like to thank everyone on this forum who posted their experiences finding a puppy and all the breeder discussions, because I think I read all of them from the last five years.
I started my search looking for a standard, but then realized I really wanted a mini. I am interested in participating in obedience, agility, etc., and was looking for a healthy dog with a good temperament that would fit into our family. I had no real preference as to color or sex.
Below is the list of breeders I had contact with via phone/FB/text or emails. I’m listing the information I received from each one, and it’s accurate at the time of this writing. I didn’t ask all of them the same questions; many of them have very good webpages with a lot of information already there. If I know the price, I will list it, but $2500 seemed pretty standard for a mini. I didn’t always ask. I make no judgment about what they had to say; this is just a factual reporting of information.
1. Black Pearl Miniature Poodle San Francisco CA
Black Pearl Poodles, in San Francisco, CA. Breeder of black minis. Emailed and completed puppy application, no response.
2. TIARA STANDARD POODLES, World Class Black Standard Poodles, California
Tiara Poodles, in La Jolla, CA. Julie breeds smaller, usually black standards. Extensive information on her webpage. This is the breeder of our six year old standard poodle. Her charge is $2900 for a poodle; this has been the same price for some time. Recently had a litter. Emailed three times and messaged once. No response.
3. https://www.danubepoodles.com/
Danube Poodles in Rock Island, TN. Timea recently moved to TN from Maryland. She breeds red minis and has one female puppy available (I think). Her price is $3000 with a $500 nonrefundable deposit. If you pick the puppy up, she will lower the price by $500. At least with this litter, she is bringing some puppies to MD to drop off with buyers. A very passionate breeder; she spoke for over an hour about raw diets, etc. She does not think dogs should be vaccinated until they are neutered and then only a rabies vaccination. Had some “tips” how to avoid the vet giving a rabies shot. Has done extensive research into poodle health. Unhappy when buyers don’t follow her health information and doesn’t want buyer to come back eight years later complaining about a health problem with the poodle.
4. Clarion Poodles - Miniature & Toy Poodle Breeders
Clarion Poodles, near Sacramento, CA. Ann and her daughter breed black and white minis and toys. She will not ship puppies, you must pick up or have her deliver the pup to you. Price is $2500 with a $500 deposit to get on her list. Not sure if she has available puppies right now. She adheres to Dr. Dodd’s vaccination protocol (as did most of the breeders with whom I spoke). Ann requires a puppy application and five references, and she states she will call every reference before deciding to sell you a puppy.
5. https://firebrookpoodles.webs.com/
Firebrook Poodles, Shamong, NJ. They breed minis in white/cream and sometimes black/blue. They have no available puppies, but are planning a breeding in the fall.
6. Beauvoir Poodles
Beauvoir Poodles is in Boulder, CO. They breed standards and minis. Carol just placed her last available puppy, but states she likes to place in agility and obedience homes No breeding of her mini for a year, because she is working on getting her UD title.
7. https://www.farthingpoodles.com/
Farthing Poodles, in Eatonville, WA. They breed standards, minis and toys. Christine is expecting a mini litter of black and maybe brown in eight weeks. She is out-of-the country until the end of May and has limited ability to communicate until then.
8. https://www.piccolospoodles.com/
Piccolo’s Poodles, near Baltimore, MD. Standards, mostly brown. Has the most information about dams and sires of any other webpage as far as health and titles. Also sent extremely detailed emails with lots of information. Definitely would have been a top contender if I’d decided on a standard, and I certainly would consider them in the future.
9. https://poodlebreeders.com/miniature/vantan/vantan.html
VanTan Poodles, Boise, ID. May have a litter of silver minis in July. Still waiting to confirm pregnancy.
10. Safranne Poodles, Specializing in Performance Miniature Poodles, Winona, MN
Safranne Poodles, Winona, MN. Breeds silver minis. One of the best webpages I came across. Lots of information. Estelle’s puppies were definitely a top contender and I would certainly love to own one someday.
11. https://nolastandards.com/
Nola Poodles, New Orleans, LA. Red standards. Another very good webpage with lots of pictures and information. A top contender if I hadn’t decided on a mini. Very nice email from Tabatha also.
12. https://www.poodlebreeders.com/LNL/index.html
Light N’ Lively Poodles, Staten Island, NY. Breeds black or white minis. Joan is expecting a litter of black or white with CH Light N’ Lively’s Hot Topic (Whoopie) and GCH Light N’ Lively’s Speakin ’Out Loud (Ryan) in July. Puppies are $2500 and there is a $500 deposit. She chooses the puppies based on buyer’s needs. She does not require a puppy application or references. Joan says, “I talk to my buyers and I know who I want to sell a puppy to.” I actually loved that.
After doing a lot of thinking, I put down a deposit for a puppy from Joan at Light N’ Lively Poodles. She has beautiful dogs with a long line of champions in conformation, and many of her dogs are participating in obedience, agility, etc. It seemed like a nice blend; not just performance, and not just conformation. I enjoyed speaking with her and she lives a little over five hours away from me. Also, my sister decided she would like to raise a mini too, and was able to get on the wait list.
I was very appreciative of the time many of these breeders spent providing information. Most of them are obviously passionate about their dogs. There are only a couple breeders on this list that wouldn’t have worked for me, but all these breeders have lovely dogs. There’s probably only one I wouldn’t recommend, but that’s just me, and don’t ask me which one! What doesn’t work for me may be perfect for you.
