also, bring water and a dish for your pup just in case he's thirsty... either the crate or the lap is fine, IMO, crate tends to be a touch safer but the dog might feel more secure being held.
Another tip I've read is GO STRAIGHT HOME. No stopping at the relatives, pet store or dog park (gasp! some people actually do this!) remember the immune system is not ready to be exposed to places other dogs may have been
