Papaya has officislly made it to ThePoodlesMoody home for wayward poodles. 😂 I figured she needed her own thread! So far, so good. She is MARKEDLY in better shape than Nasa was. Looks like she's got a blocked tear duct and her feet mats need shaving and I think she looks maybe a little thin, but her disposition is good! She hopped right into my car and kenneled up with no problems. She already knows "sit" and knows how to do the whole leash thing.

Picasso is weirdly interested in her, maybe because he can smell she's pregnant and that's weird for him. He gets the hump-y look in his eye, she growls, he says okay okay and backs off.

She doesn't seem to care about household noises and novel things. The robovac started running and she looked at it and then decided she didn't care. She approaches people. Who knows what she will be like when she settles in, but for now it's good.

She's tired and seems to want her alone time from the other dogs, so we have her set up in her own bedroom and double gated the hall to keep the other busy body dogs out of her business! They said she was due the 17th, and maybe that's true! (But also maybe not because who knows how good the records are.)

Either way, I better get my act together!

The name initially assigned to her was "Alexa" but I didn't want to set off my Amazon spies every time I called the dog. I asked the rescue to change it to Papaya before she got here. 😂

SUPPOSEDLY she is due the 17th as in three days from now, but like I said... I have my doubts. I mean she's big but she doesn't seem quite that big to me! In different positions the belly seems to either go away or stick out more. This may be wishful thinking but I just can't see her whelping this week.

She slept in her crate last night with no complaints. I initially had her loose in the room but she couldn't seem to settle. She'd walk in her crate, walk out, walk in. As soon as I closed the door to her crate she passed out and stayed quiet the whole night.

She's still stinky cause I haven't bathed her yet. She seemed so tired yesterday that I didn't want to bother her with one more thing. I also gotta figure out how to do her feet and ears.

I've definitely been swamped today with human child stuff. I'm currently waiting at the ER as I write this. My son took a tumble on the playground and hit his head. Now he's throwing up and in so much pain! Poor guy. He didnt lose consciousness and he's still coherent but Im sure they will want to do spme imaging or something. The wait times are atrocious so I'm sure we will be here a long time. We've been here about 2 hours in the waiting room so far.

So. You know. If you PFers can send some magic my way so I could get caught up before puppy time that'd be great. ☺

My son is home. He has a concussion and needs to lay low, but he's feeling much better. Better enough to be happy that he doesn't have to go to school tomorrow! Nothing like a quick 6 hour jaunt to the ER....

Tomorrow AM I also have to call the vet for Papaya and see when they can get her in. She's ear shaking a lot and then I'll also have them look at her stye/eye bump/whatever thingy while she's there. And maybe they can give a good estimate of when to expect babies, but also maybe not. That probably depends on which doctor I get and how busy they are.

As for tonight... I'm going to bed!

#2 is here now. A boy and a girl so far. Wasn't quite set up yet! Whelping box arrives tomorrow.

They both just started nursing and I'm cranking my heat fast as I can! She won't let me leave and now she's covered me in birthing goodness. She basically sat in my lap to pop them out. I mean. Thanks but also ew lol

She's up to four now! All have been around 12 oz, except for Mr Chonker who was 15.4 oz. I had to scramble to find ribbons since whelping collars weren't supposed to arrive til friday.... lol

Last boy was breech but seems to be doing just fine.

We weren't done! I knew she had more to go. We're up to 5 now - four boys and one girl.

She's doing well. The last pup took a bit more effort because he weighed over a pound. She isnt totally comfortable, so I dont know that she's done yet. At the very least she has to deliver the latest placenta still.

I so want to go to bed, but Papaya doesn't seem quite comfortable yet. She's just a little more restless and pant-y than I'd like, so I'm giving her more calcium and keeping an eye on her. I wouldn't go so far as to say she's in distress, but she looks uncomfortable. All placentas are accounted for now.

It's still just the five pups who seem perfect. Likely I'm staying up for nothing, but I'd rather be safe and tired than sorry.

At least my son (and everyone else in the house) is sleeping comfortably!

Last pup was at 8:30, but she had been resting quietly up until 45 minutes ago. My line of thinking is 1. Give calcium in case of eclampsia like symptoms causing the problem, see if that helps. 2. Give her a while to see if she was just taking a long rest between babies and labor has just started up again.

Or possibly 3, maybe she is just warm and uncomfortable because the pool is 80 degrees, and until recently she had spent most of her time outdoors.

Okay well either the calcium helped her feel better or posting on poodle forum solved my problems.

She's back to comfortable sleeping and nice easy breathing. Now maybe I can finally sleep. Because I am no longer of an age where I can stay up past 1am multiple days in a row. Or even for one day in a row. lol

I'm calling it right now: red collar boy is going to be a handful. 😂

He already scoots back and forth across the pool, tries to kick his siblings out of the best milk bar seats, and literally climbs on top of Papaya, falls over the other side, then screams about it. LOL

I gave up with ribbons because both my husband and I can easily identify who is who and they kept coming untied. They're too little for the whelping collars so they will survive a few days til they fit!

There was very minimal weight loss at this morning's weigh in. Tonight they were already climbing back up, I think all but one were back above birth weight. All are warm and pink and moving around and being perfect.

Papaya has been a dream mom. She's very careful not to squish her babies and cleans them off expertly. She barks to go potty, runs out, immediate potties, and runs back to the babies. She's back to eating and drinking.

Now. Hopefully tonight I can sleep all night through. No crying dogs or children, please!

Here's the obligatory puppy tax. This is big boy #5. My children and husband refer to him as "Chungus #2" until he gets an actual name. When the first 1 lb baby came out, my son said, "Wow he's a chungus." Then we saw the second, even bigger boy come out and he got dubbed Chungus #2. LOL

Also, thank you for the compliments! Things like this just don't rattle me, although I've read many books and have access to some great mentors. I've had puppies once before, but they were a surprise litter of rat terriers and I really knew very little about dogs' development and nervous systems back then. I HAVE also had my own three babies as well as helped deliver my friend's children too.

The funny thing is that I am an overthinker of the smallest details. Yet when there are legitimate decisions to be made or a crisis to navigate, I'm actually at my best.

Quick morning weigh-in before leaving for a few hours with work. All puppies are past their birth weights and gaining. Papaya doesn't have post-whelping diarrhea and has given us two nice solid poops... outside! What a champion. 😊

This little fella is the winner of the best behaved while being weighed award this morning. This is the boy with the star marked butt, puppy #4.

They're all brown and white... for now! I'm interested to see how they fade, as I don't know how the springer part of dad might influence coloring. I'm no where near smart enough to understand all of those genetics. 😄

They're now officially named. I finished my huge work project today (thanks hubby for puppysitting!) and then promptly wasted my time making birth announcements instead of catching up on laundry or cleaning up my house.

They've always said dad was springer doodle and they also said she was due the 17th. I initially didnt trust that because, well, the entire operation is questionable. But she did whelp when they thought she would, so I guess I am willing to believe it! They try to contain the girls in heat and didn't intend to breed her but a springer doodle got to her before that I guess. They do try, I just believe things have gotten out of control for them.

All of their puppies have quite a poodly coat. Some of their adult males are F1B doodles and most of their adult females are purebred poodle, according to the social media spying I've done. They never advertise F1 puppies but I have deduced that they've sold F1B and F1BB doodles. I get the feeling that they keep everything mostly poodle for the coat and throw in the small doodle piece so they can advertise doodles and get in some really cute colors and patterns.

So... I guess long story short I'm pretty confident in my guess that these babies are at least 75% poodle but there is a good chance that they're more poodle than that. But then again, Durian's coat is pretty dang smooth so far! Hehe.

And of course.... this info all has a huge asterisk because 1. You're relying on me to piece together various social media pictures to identify their dogs and 2. You're relying on the info they give on social media to be accurate. LOL I suppose anything is possible!

Finally got the big whelping box set up for them! Papaya appreciates it because she can fully stretch out now. She fit in the pool, but either had to have her back curled against the pool or had to move to the middle and have no space for her legs. Plus now we've got pig rails so I can sleep easy in my own bed knowing they won't get squished!

Morning weigh-in was ok. Everyone is gaining, but I am thinking Guava may be a little slow. I'll have to look up exact measures for when to do supplemental feedings or suspect a problem. But she appears vigorous and she's warm and as mobile as any of the rest, so I am not concerned yet.

We're working on laundry catch up and house cleaning today so maybe I'll grt some order back in my life! (Or not. ;) )

P.S. bonus pic of Jackfruit snuggling up to Papaya's leg.

The other dogs don't really seem to care. Picasso went nuts at first and we actually dropped him off ar my sister's house so he wouldn't disrupt Papaya's peaceful birthing suite. Now he doesn't even try to get in there.

Today was the first nail trim for the puppies. The baby fingernail clipper still looks big next to the puppies! I can't guarantee I did a good job but I at least did -A- job. 😅
