We had to put down our first rescue Standard (Louie) yesterday.
He was only 11, would have been 12 in December. He had ongoing disk problems and finally he lost function of his back legs. He was a very good boy, always cheerful. Even when he was down, he was upbeat. He could not get up, but he had a sparkle in his eye. I will miss him!

Thanks to your love and special care, he was able to know what it felt like to have a full life and experience a dignified death with the ones he loved. Here's to Louie! He was one of those dogs who was grateful to have a home, and have poodle brothers and sisters to play with.
When his disk problem was first diagnosed we were worried he would not lead a normal life, but to our surprise he did very well. I am glad he didn't suffer.
Our last evening together we layed with him and fed him his favorite foods, and rubbed his feet. He loved his front feet rubbed!

So sorry for your loss. You did the right thing. We had to do the same for a senior lab we had years ago. We came home and he couldn't get up at all - couldn't move. We fed him, watered him (labs NEVER turn down a meal!), picked him up (all 85 lb. of him), and took him to the vet. He went peacefully to the bridge a happy dog.

That was pretty much how it went. We are fortunate and our vet comes to the house. It is a hard situation, but I feel like his life was a success. We got him, got him cleaned up and healthy, gave him a good life, and medical care for his problems. He lived longer than I expected considering the disc issue.
I would LOVE to find another rescue standard, but in our area they are few and far between!
