Kibble-breaking breakthrough!

Having toy dogs, and being a training nerd, I need really small reinforcers to be able to treat my dogs as often as I do. I feed them their kibble meals via training sessions, but even that fills their tummies up too fast. So I try to break up the kibble, but it hurts my fingers, and sometimes even the tendons in my wrists if I try to break up the whole day's rations. Today I actually got a blister on my thumb, so I switched to the other hand. And I got another blister! Ugh! I've never gotten one before, so I don't know why my thumbs are so sensitive today, but I was forced to find another alternative because that's really not cool. I've already tried bashing kibble in a ziploc baggie and it creates more dust than usable bits, the food processor does the same thing. Knives just sort of crush them, or send them flying across the room!

Well, out of nowhere tonight I thought "Nail clippers!" Sure enough, they cut through each kibble like butter and left two nice clean halves, and even quarters!! I could've cried. Haha For years I've been trying to stretch out their kibble and now I can do it without pain! : P Tedious, yes, but I can just do it while watching tv or something. I'm so happy. I don't know if this would be helpful to anyone else out there, but I just had to share! Stop breaking your fingers! Use nail clippers!!

Can't resist saying sometimes the best way to solve a problem is to chip (clip!) away at it, and you have! :) Good thinking! I've been looking for a way to cut up the big nuggets of Vital Essentials without them crumbling. It may take a guillotine!

Haha!!! I totally feel your pain!! I have had to saw bully sticks in half several times, (with a kitchen knife!!! LOL) because one ate it too fast, then I'm left with one bully stick and 2 poodles ! :p LOL and I don't feel like driving to the store or something, so many many times I've worked so hard to cut those bully sticks in half!!! It's really really difficult :D but the babies are so thankful when I do, that's it's worth the temporary joint pain hehehehe :)

Ps. I believe this will definitely help someone! Thanks for sharing :)

I buy big ones and use a hacksaw to cut them to size. Works like a charm! :becky:

Chagall's Mom, I hope that works for you! : ) I have scissor-style clippers, but I'm sure different styles or sizes would work. My girls' kibble is small, like cat food, so it fits right into the groove of the clippers where the nail would go. But, if I switched to a bigger kibble and it didn't quite work, I'd go clipper shopping specifically for kibble clippers! Hahaha It's a necessary kitchen tool now, imo!

Lou, if you have hedge clippers they might make short work of a bully stick! I buy toothbrushes in bulk for my salon, and they're double-ended with a toothbrush on each end. I use my hedge clippers to snip them each into two separate toothbrushes. More accurately, I enlist my brother to do it!! Hahaha It's pretty easy, but it does take a bit of force and it's a 50-pack. My brother just breezes through them, I'd need to put ice on my wrists! : P

If you don't want to have to do that, there is a kibble I recently got that is slightly smaller than a piece of unpopped popcorn....really small! Molly has missing premolars (never had them) and doesn't like large kibble .
It is called 'Healthy Extension Little Bites' by Vets Choice. It is made for 'Teacup, Toy, & Miniature Dogs' and is labeled as 'Holistic'
All I know is Molly LOVES it and she doesn't like many kibbles!

Here's a pic.............see how small?!!!!:eating:

MollyMuiMa, I have kibble envy!! My pups don't eat animal products, but that sure looks like a great food. Molly knows what's good for her! The kibble my girls are eating now is the smallest I've found, but it's still at least twice as big as Molly's! I love that the company makes such tiny kibble for little ones. I think Lumi gets a little overwhelmed chewing on average sized kibbles! : P

I don't know if y'all have grooming tables, but I've used the clamp of my grooming arm many times as a vice to hold things I saw. I also slid the grooming arm itself, which is hollow, over the handle of a tire iron to get enough leverage to loosen lug nuts. Grooming stuff has so many uses! : D

Come to think of it, I'm surprised there aren't more tiny kibbles or training treats for toy dogs! No wonder so many people think "treat training makes dogs fat". On so many Youtube videos of dogs doing tricks I see the dog get an entire milkbone after each trick! : P

Okay, so here's a confession...I once ironed a pair of cotton shorts on my grooming table! Put a towel on it, then the shorts, because I was too lazy to set up the ironing board. I had just groomed Chagall and it was there, and they were there, and I wanted to take him for a walk....:D

I've heard of a pill-cutter, but never knew what it looked like or how it worked. Thanks for showing me! : ) Maybe my grandma has one and will let me test it out sometime. For now, I've gotten this kibble-clipping down to a science. I can pretty much pick up 4 kibbles and pop-pop-pop-pop them right through the nail clippers. Hahaha I'm a kibble-clipping addict now, it's never been so easy! : D

And the doggies seem to be having more fun in our sessions since they just take one bite and they're ready for the next cue or reward. With whole kibbles, sometimes Lumi would even come out of her sit or stand because half of the kibble would fall out of her mouth while she was chewing, so she'd crouch down to eat it off the floor. I know I need to proof against treats on the floor, but it's hard to manage when I can't really predict crumbs coming out of her mouth! Haha
