I borrowed the most amazing dog training DVD's from my library and I highly recommend them for everyone, whether you have a new puppy or an older dog.
First this is from The Great Courses company - they have been in business for many years. They specialize in producing DVDs of university level courses. They hire the best university professors to give what I describe as those 101 courses - that first year course that covers all the basics on a subject matter. My DH and I have watched most of their courses - thanks to my wonderful library system investing in these DVD's - they are not cheap.
I was so happy to see they had one on dog training:

Dog Training 101
Course No. 9418
Jean Donaldson, Expert Dog Trainer
$269.95 24 lectures on 4 DVDs.
This course is complete - she covers everything - including things often not covered such as how to prepare your dog to be examined by a vet and brushing their teeth as well as basics on teaching sit and down, leave it, recall etc.
She does discuss the various training methods - but minimally, and it's done to explain that there are different techniques that can be used in different situations. There is enough theory to justify being a university level course, but not so much that you feel overwhelmed or lose interest.
Part of why I love this is she is training three dogs on the DVD that she had just met. At then end she explains that she met with dogs belonging to the people who were filming her and she auditioned them to find one main dog and a back up as well as a small dog so she could cover different topics. You see her actually training the dog - watch her technique as well as listen to her explanation of the training. How she handles when the dog isn't doing what is asked, how to set criteria and determine if the dog is learning the skill etc. The taping is very professional and course is well thought out.
If your library has a copy, I highly recommend watching it. If your library doesn't have a copy - I would request that they buy one. At $269.95 it is expensive, but I thing worth buying if you have a young dog and don't have any good training facility nearby for classes.
