Ticks are starting to appear here in Central Europe and I'm always cautious about what to put on our 'fragile' toy poodles against ticks. Eager to hear latest scientific findings and experiences from other members on safest remedies out there 🤗

We use the medications. Also when in an area we check at least once daily for ticks. We have a "tick removal tool", which we take with us all the time. We had a tick on the skin (not embedded) that I found about a month ago. (only been around our home). We just got back from traveling--and found one tick on Gigi on the trip. We check at least 2x a day, and especially before bedtime for ticks.

I have used NexGard oral medication on all my dogs for 10+ years, including the 10 lb cairn terrier. No fleas, no ticks and I live in the south where both are rampart . Have a talk with your vet to see his recommendation for your area.

Personally, I've never used flea/tick collars on any of my dogs. I've always relied on medication prescribed by the vet, I've used Comfortis and Trifexis which are tablets given monthly.
Please note that neither of these medications protect against ticks (according to the manufacturer). For that, a tick shampoo is recommended.
