Hello , I have a male 9month old poodle that is 17 inches and I’m confused weather he is a standard, medium or miniature ,I’ve done many research about it and I’m still confused, maybe you guys can help me out on finding out ? Thank you
If your dog came from miniature parents, they are usually referred to as oversized miniatures. Technically standards but the temperament and bone structure differs so it can be more sensible to call them oversize minis.
Shayleen, if that's the poodle in question's picture, he has really long legs. I have a mini and I gaze at the legs of the standards pictured on the forum with awe. My mini is 'average' but his legs aren't as long as your dogs.
It all boils down to his genetics. If he comes from registered standard poodles then he is a standard, if he came from a miniature then he is a miniature. As reraven said anything over 15 inches isa standard however if your dog came from miniatures then he is an over sized miniature. Make sense?
The medium size poodle is not officially recognized by North American breed clubs. No poodle in the US or Canada can be registered as a medium.
There are only a very, very few breeders who are importing true medium's from the countries that recognize that size officially. Most of the folks calling their poodles "medium" are either interbreeding standards and minis (not a well thought of idea), or they simply have miniatures who exceed the 15" limit, or standards who are on the small side of typical.
I dont hold a lot of stock in the size charts for poodles out there but I have gotten so many requests for them I decided to post some of the better ones here. Remember though, there are NO weight restrictions on poodles only height so really weight doesnt have a lot to do with the poodle.
Toys are 10 inches in height and under.
Miniatures are over 10 inches to 15 inches.
Standards are over 15 inches. This by the breed standards for both AKC and UKC.
NOTE: A poodles height is measured from the ground up to the top of the withers (shoulder blades).

Are you sure one of the parents was not a Miniature, and the other a Standard?
