Why is it(besides obvious reasons) that almost every groomer I have talked to either wants a Standard poodle or has one? Is it because you can do so much with their hair? :questionmark:
I have a question for the groomers................

I am not a groomer,but my guess would be,that standard poodle can really showcase their ability as a groomer.
If you can do a good job on a dog like that,obviously you can bathe,dry and trim the nose of any other breed.
If you browse through groomer's advertisments online,just about all have a picture of a poodle.

I think it does have a lot to do with being able to do a lot with the breed in general. I mean when first learning to groom dogs and only having a German Shepherd to play around with I was pretty limited.
To be honest when I first started working as a bather oh I dreaded the days that standards would come in! As I started working on them more and more and fluffing out their coat I became quite attached to the breed and the personality as well. Every Standard that came in was an absolute sweetheart. Yes they were time consuming but what better dog to spend that time with.
I also am the type of person that unless im able to DO it I will not learn it. I can't sit and read a book and just absorb all the knowledge through reading or anything so I wanted a dog I could learn on and if the poor thing ended up with a bad haircut well it's my own dog and i have no shame! So that's when I got Vega!
Also as many of you know one Standard just isn't enough so I brought home Dodger as well and couldn't be happier. I think Pandora the German Shepherd is feeling not so much like a princess anymore (although she's still a spoiled brat and she knows it!)
My boyfriend had said no to a poodle for quite some time but I finally introduced him to many of the dogs that come into the shop showing him that they are good dogs. He had met three Standards in his lifetime and all three tried to bite him, lol!
He loves his Vega though!

I think it has to do with being around the breed and falling for their personalities! That's how it was for me, I loved the smaller ones but had only met one Standard...until I started grooming and then I fell in love!
Sure there is a lot of coat to work with but their are a lot of breeds with coats you can do things with but its the personalty that draws them in.

LoL, YOU know what that isnt the case here in my area. I believe that I am one of two groomers here that has a poodle at all. I was stronlgly strongly advised again getting one by more than one groomer actualy. They said they would never ever have a poodle or any other breed with a coat like it. They said that I wouldn't want to groom it and it would end up 10 stripped all over all the time..
I groom the girls every week just about and yeah sometimes I don't feel like it but sometimes I don't feel like doing the dishes either.
I fell in love with the poodles because of all the fun things you can do with the hair. I fell in love with the spoo because it had a big bark and I am alone a lot at night. It sounds like some vicious beast on the other side of the door if you knock in the evening when I am home.... you don't know it's a poodle lol. As a trainer I knew there was no more intelligent breed and since I like something different it was a change from all the godlens and boarder collies lol. Really the perfect dog for me.
I will admit too to using the poodles for marketing. I always take busniness cards to the dog park or puppy classes or anywhere else I may have the poodles with me. People always ask where I get them groomed and I am prepared I've gotten several new clients that way.

I'm like wonderpup, the only person in my salon or in any of the local salons i know of who actually wants a full coated dog. there's one girl I work with who has two spoos and a mini and she keeps them all shaved. I mostly fell in love with their personalities first and the hair was a bonus. and what better dog to practice on then your own.
It's a lot like working for a gaming store and having tons of video games at home. or like working for a record label and having your own band. You love what you do as a job so poodles fit perfectly into that.
Also, every bad dog that has come in lately has made me want my own spoo more and more. Grooming a well behaved sweet dog with a great coat isn't work at all, it's really relaxing.

i wanted a poodle because i love the look of them and thought they had lovely personalltys but i couldnt cope with a standard so thats why i went for a min

All the Standards that I had ever worked on in my years of grooming were wonderful dogs, so they already had a place in my heart as a breed.
I think it makes sense for a groomer to have a dog to practice on and/or showcase. Monroe is my roaming advertisement...but mostly he's just the coolest dog I've ever had...You know, smart, sweet, non-smelly and no-shed...fun...cute...beautiful!
Meanwhile, I'm learning constantly about how to improve my grooming skills...

I have two groomers that I use here in San Francisco and both are master groomers that do a lot of show poodles, and own their own standards. When I visit my parents in L.A. during the summer, the groomer I use has three standards and one or two minitures. She competes in grooming competions with her Silver male and shows her minis. I book an appoitment with her a month or two before I go down south as she is usually booked solid.

For their looks and personalities and thirdly cause it would give me coat to practice on. I wanted a stunning dog, our old shepherd is a beautifully bread boy and gets noticed where ever he goes, it must be the show pony in me but I wanted a dog that would tun heads as well - and together when freshly groomed they are like a magnet for people :lol:
I read that spoos are quite independant and playful, the shepherd is very needy and has some seperation issues, he is quite bonded to me and I thought it woul dbe good to get a more independant dog - which T certainly is!
And finally cause I am a self taught learner groomer and I enjoy the time I spend clipping, brushing and bathing him. He has improved my skills out of sight and like someone said sometimes I don't want to do it, but then I think how wonderful he looks and feels when he is done, and he really enjoys the one on one time with me :smile: I have a good set up where I can bath anytime day or night so it's not so hard to find the right time to groom him.
