Just wanted to introduce myself... My name is Jehn and I am from Calgary, AB. I have a 1 1/2yr old purebred male black standard named Bauer. (Named after Jack Bauer of the tv show 24). We adopted him from a local breeder at the age of 10 weeks.

I have been married for 3 1/2 years and we have a 17 month old daughter.

That about sums it up... I joined this forum looking for advice on my over-excited poodle in hopes that you might have some good training tips. He is a really good dog but my husband is frustrated to the point of wanting to find another home for him - which I most certainly don't want to do. As far as I am concerned, he is as much a part of our family as any of us... He just needs some proper training to get him to calm down a bit.

Look forward to talking to you all on the boards.

Jehn

Oh, I'm so sad to hear that your poodle is causing problems at home. I've in this situation many times and it's hard. I hope your husband can realize that he will mature as time goes by. My big boy is a handful too, plus a barker. Tell your husband what a great protector the dog is when you are alone with your daughter. My Donner is a great guard dog and we sort of got him with that in mind.

Our breeder told us most pets in the animal shelter are 1 to 2 years old. That is the most active and the most critical time to triain them. Poodles are VERY smart and easily trained. I can empathize. I have two (check them out under pictures - My beautiful family) Sergio is such a sweet lover. It takes him longer to learn something but he is so obedient. Carlo on the other hand is so strong willed... he learns VERY fast and decides when he will do what you ask. (they both had the same trainder) There was a time, when he was about 18 months old, I wanted to give him back to the breeder. If you are bored, go here and read my saga.
http://www.poodledog.com/success_stories/carlogiovanni.html He is just too smart. He is thinking all the time and does not act like a dog, but more like a moody person. I love both he and Sergio but next time, I'd definitely be a little more clear with the breeder about what I wanted. Carlo is too independent and head strong. Though Sergio is his full liter mate, we rescued Sergio when his owners could no longer care for him. He is so good, some of him has rubbed off on Carlo. Thank God.
Best of Luck.
