Hello from New York

My 4 months old miniature puppy, Yankee Doodle, will move to New York City to live with me next month. We got him in Germany where he's staying with my parents until he's old enough to travel internationally.

Would love to get any tips on airline travel. Airline confirmed he can fly in cabin with me, on the floor or on my lap.

We signed him up for an AKC dog show in early June in Connecticut in the the 4-6 months baby class. He has FCI papers and he's now dual registered with the AKC. Would anybody here have recommendations for a groomer or a handler who can help me near NYC? I'm planning to learn to groom him myself, but I don't want to use the clippers for the first time right before a show.

He's doing a show two weeks earlier in Germany - but I don't know any groomers or trainers/handlers here and all the groomers I can find online are pet groomers. Thank you :help:

There are a couple of show groomers in NJ but I’m not sure how far from the city. I found them on AKC Marketplace. You can do your own search and specify a distance you are willing to go.

I would contact one of your local poodle clubs. They can be a wealth of information.

I would contact the local poodle club - however mine is not very active or responsive to emails and at one point their website was completely out of date. You may need to be persistent. Join the poodle club and start making those connections and support you'll need for success.

Look for an AKC dog training club. Find out when the conformation classes are, try to meet with the people and look into joining the club. Sign up for classes when your new puppy will have arrived. These people will have good resources and will support when you show. If you have two clubs near you - I would take classes at both clubs and then you might decide to join one or both clubs.

Good luck
There are two New York area poodle clubs nearish to NYC. One is the Poodle Obedience Training Club of Greater New York (most members are actually in NJ) and the Quinnipiac Poodle Club in Connecticut. Aside from those clubs you could contact either of these breeders (both in Connecticut who actively show and are both excellent groomers), Rod of Rodell's toy poodles who has a grooming business in addition to grooming his own dogs that are showing and Delana Severs of Madela Poodles who bred my boy Javelin (a Mikimoto grandson). If they can't help you directly I am betting they will be able to put you in tough with someone who can.

Thanks so much for your help! So glad I found this forum. I'm already trying to get in touch with the Poodle obedience club, and I'll try the one in CT. I'll also look up the two breeders you suggested and see how far away they are. Living in Manhattan without a car, trips like those get a bit more complicated.

I've found an AKC Club with handling classes and training for competitions, really hoping I can join that club. Anything I find downtown teaches only "manners".

PS: I realized that we might have a very short show career in the AKC because our European puppy isn't docked.

Depending on how your puppy carries his tail (I can only see the small picture on your profile and it seems to have a beautiful tail set) I don't think the tail is going to be a problem at all. I see it a lot in English Cockers right now where pretty much in every single show I have been to from Westminster to the Nationals you see the full tail and these dogs not only don't get dismissed they even place. And in an EC it is really obvious - stump vs full swinging tail - much more so than a Poodle. I have a groomer friend in Westchester who owns her own place and who works a lot with top show handlers (not sure about Poodles specifically) but if nothing else she would definitely point you in the right direction.
Since I totally get the idea of not wanting a car in the city, I might suggest checking into zip cars as a way to get to Connecticut if you need to.

Also I don't think you will find a good dog training club in Manhattan. There is the Staten Island Companion Dog Training Club (obviously on Staten Island), The Port Chester Obedience Training Club (actually in White Plains), top Dog Obedience School in Flanders, NJ and on Long Island Suffolk Obedience Training Club in Deer Park and Doggie U in Bay Shore.

Thank you all so much for your replies :cute: I contacted several people, and I found a groomer an hour away who used to be on Groom USA team, I'm 100% sure she knows what she's doing. I'm so grateful that she has time for us the day before the show. She'll show me on a model how to do the top knot on the day of the show.

I've also signed up for a course with PCOTC. The references of the trainers are impressive.

I hope I'm not planning more than my puppy can handle, but so far he's been extremely outgoing and brave.
I am happy that you found a good groomer and a puppy class that will work for you at PCOTC. Everyone there is very nice. I have shown there in rally many times with Lily.
