This was posted on craigslist about a Hartz flea medication that a girl claims made her dog pretty ill. She looked in to Hartz and realized they have a bad hidden reputation. I personally dont know how true this is but just thought Id pass it on just in case.

hello everyone on CL. i am a bonafide animal lover, pet owner, and animal specialist who wants to share something important with others like me so please dont start saying mean things to me out of nowhere, because i did nothing wrong. well here is my story. we just adopted a dog named Joey from here on CL from a wonderful family. he's a doxie mix and an amazing dog. according to the previous owners, he has no health problems, and is a very active dog. which was true, as we had him very thoroughly checked by our family vet, and he cleared with flying colors. we have been observing him everyday, and nothing has gone wrong so far. until we put flea meds on him. we are on a tight budget right now, because of bills and rent being due, so we had to buy over the counter. we bought Hartz Ultra Guard and figured it would be fine, because we have always used it on all our other animals before, and nothing had gone wrong. i put flea meds on all the animals on the same day so i can observe for any signs of allergy. my cats had no problems, and my German Shepherd pup had nothing going wrong, and neither did Joey. then BAM! just 30 mins ago Joey had a violent seizure that lasted 2 minutes. it happened out of nowhere. but like 2 hours before he vomited a bit, and resumed playing with his toys. we were worried, but all dogs vomit out of the blue at times. we fed him canned food and gave him water. everything went dandy and then the seizure happened while we were watching the end of the puppy mill exposure on animal planet. so imagine our panic! we picked him up and set him on the floor, (he was on the sofa with us previously), and i ran to get scissors to chop off his flea collar. because that was the first thing i suspected. my roommate held him and then i ran to the bathroom to fill the tub with water to bathe him to remove the flea meds that were on his underfur. he immediately started to get better and we dried him and fed him a bit more. and he was fine! all day he was fine til a while ago, and now he is acting as if nothing happened. im pretty darn sure the flea meds had something to do with this, because this dog has been fine since we got him. all our animals havent had any problems, but Joey did. and that scared us enough. so he's going to the vet tomorrow, first thing. and also i started to do some research online. and i found a website called www.hartzvictims.org and it exposes Hartz and all their products and what they have done to their animals. i had NO IDEA that this company had so many lawsuits against them!!!! and i had no idea that their products hurt so many animals! none of my other pets had any problems before, just Joey. so i dont want people on here to accuse me of being a bad owner or any other b.s. because i am not. i had no idea that this company had such a bad hidden reputation. i trusted their products like everyone else did. now i know never ever to buy anything from them ever again! i am shocked and afraid and i thought i would share my story with pet owners on here so they can avoid a bad experience on behalf of Hartz aka Hurtz. please help stop this company from continuing to do this to innocent pet owners and pets. visit the site and help stop them and share your stories. nobody should have to find out the hard way like we did. please spread the word, and by doing so you may help save a life. thank you for reading and dont buy Hartz products! they're EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW! crazy story...!!!

I recently bought some rawhide bones made by Hartz. They claim to have "dental shield" and be great for pups' teeth/breath. I was a bit reluctant when I bought them because of the "Hartz" name... I know that they don't have the greatest reputation. I try to stay away from name brands like that (Hartz, Purina, etc) and try my best to get items that are all natural...

I have to say tho, so far so good! The bones are working great for Snoops and he loves them.

We always warn our customers away from Hartz flea products. One girl I work with knew a chow in Baltimore that lost all it's hair from either the flea shampoo or the medication. Recently a maltese came in that was all greasy, and whatever was on him started taking off a groomers nail polish. Turns out it was Hartz. I've just never heard one good thing about Hartz and I would never risk using it.

You know crap like this just confirms the idiocy of the human race.

All Flea and Tick products are poisonous; over the counter or Vet provided. Of all of these reports how many people actually read the instructions and warnings before using the product? I would say less then 10%

Its not surprising that some animals have an allergic reaction to flea and tick preventive. Its advised by Vets to not use Revolution with out a heartworm test because the topical treatment will kill heartworms buy being absorbed by the skin.

*shrug* Until something happens I'll keep using it.

I Agree with your PP! There will be reactions to all flea medicines. Hartz is just getting the bad end of the stick right now. K9 advantix had warnings posted all over the net a few years ago saying that if you put this on your dog your cat can get sick or die.

the best stuff I used to keep fleas away in my apt is http://www.zodiacpet.com/

I use the carpet powder and spray , I let it sit then vaccum it up another good carpet spray is RAID flea spray. ( i like the smell lol) both work really well I use the Raid more since its at every drug store near me.

Thats very interesting...

I don't disagree that all 99% of flea and tick products contain toxin, thats a fact. But I think it is important to note that some of the ingredients used effect the flea in different way... it kills the differently. Some dogs may tolerate one better than the other.

What I find most questionable is WHY does hartz have a much higher rate of reaction in my area than the other flea products? Improper use maybe... or truely an unsafe product? Thats a good question, but I don't have an answer.

Usually most people use hartz once in my area. It's crap, so when it doesnt work they never use it again LoL. I say that loosely by the way, it may work fine where you live but we haves da super duper fleas here LoL. It's a waste of money.

That's the only part I don't agree with lol

It could be the companies products. But over the years I have seen many companies get complaints. Hartz might have a harsher chemical Hence why its cheap.

Lol I live in rural Oklahoma and I'll be damned if you can find bigger and badder fleas then what I have to deal with!

I started using Frontline and after a year the fleas became immune to it so I started using Hartz.

*shrug* to each their own, its the same thing as "bad pet food" some are fine and others aren't.

I don't know why its interesting to you that I think people are idiots...:sheep:

People react to different drugs as do dog react to different things NOBODY is 100 the same as the next person.
Yes they are all poison and some will react differently to each thing.
Casey can take his shots at same time Mandy reacts when she gets her shots at same time should I say all rabies shots are stupid don't do them.
No

It is the world we live in that these stories cross borders quicker and get exagerated beyond belief some times If your dog reacts it does say wash with soap and water as soon as possible. If I were to use a product I would do it when I was home for a few hours so I could watch my dog.

Sometimes we won't know the dog will react and some times they don't react untill the second or third time. But it is still sold and some people swear buy it so it must work for some dogs.

LoL, Sorry, I didn't explain that part because I was worried you would take it wrong and get offended.
I thought it was interesting because it seemed to be directed at everyone as a whole. Which isn't super friendly.

I'm not a dope and I've seen first hand that hartz doesn't work here and that it seems to have a higher reaction rate that advantage or frontline, though frontline is losing ground here because it's not working well either.

I agree 100%!!!
This could very well be negligence on her part! Using the wrong product (depending on size or weight) could make your dog sick - regardless of the brand used! I worked at a veterinarian... and believe me - people do the stupidest things imaginable just to save money!!!

I'm not offended easily ;) My faith in the human race is...lacking as I have seen to many first hand dumb asses. When things like this happen its like well duh, its bound to happen as the package says right on there about TOXIC TO HOUSEHOLD PETS so yeah. Granted I would be pissed if something happened to my animal but I would not go round screaming "DEATH TO HARTZ" and start a website about it.

Anyway... Never said you were a dope, I've had it not work for my cats so I don't use it on them and I rarely use any store/vet brand flea and tick treatment and instead use Diatomaceous Earth. :) But if someone asks me to recommend one I'll suggest Hartz, DE and yard treatments.

Jester's mom and I had just been talking about going to the garlic pills. She said it worked well when she used it in the past. Anyone have any experience with that to share?

Honestly, Hartz has not worked for my pets. That is not to say it is not an effective product.

When I am in pain and ask Dianne for something she offers Ibuprophen. This works really well for her. It does absolutely nothing for me. I have to take Alleve. Obviously our systems react completely differently to meds. I'm sure it is the same with our pets. A med might be great for one but do nothing for another.

Every medication comes with side effects that are harmful and I'm sure most of us are aware of that. Sometimes it is just a crap shoot and you just don't know how your animal will react to it. It is good to be around and be prepared for adverse reactions.
