So I shaved Sting today with my #30 blade. Its the closest he's ever been shaved. Right after, he started itching his muzzle. I immediatly put some good aloe vera on his muzzle and neck. It seemed to help but is there a better alternative or should stock up on the aloe vera? Any suggestions?

I think the shorter blade definately irritated him making it itch. I know it was not from a hot blade but because it was a closer shave. I put the aloe on it and it seemed to work but I was just wondering what technique's other's may have. Im sure there are products out there formulated for close shaving but its probably more costly. So I assume. lol

On the blade's I know you an go up to a #40 which is super close, like almost NO hair. You see that on most show Poodle's but not usually on pets. Im personally not brave enough to go that short but finally decided to just do the 30 on Sting. I used the 30 on Eli a few weeks ago and he had no reaction to a closer shave.

Sting might get use to it given a few goes. I use an after sun moisturiser on T, it has aloe in it, and that seems to work quite well. After I accidently did him with the #40 the other week and he was irritated around his mouth I put some anti itch cream I had for me on it and he stopped itching straight away.

What did you think about the #40 on T? The hubby bought be a T style clipper that is supposed to be great for between the toes. It came with a #35 blade. I used it on Sting but I just didn't like it on a puppy. When he is more mature I will go shorter (#35) probably. I returned the clipper and had my other Andis clipper's fixed and bought a #30 blade instead.

One other question. When I got Eli's littermate brother (Rocky-Fuzbutz Poodle) the breeder gave me her 2 speed Andis clipper's. Well they weren't working but I had them fixed and now they work great. I priced them new (petsmart) and they sell for 189.00 . My other Andis clipper's were 90.00. The more expensive clipper runs really hot. I didn't expect that with a higher end clipper ecspecially since they're the same brand.

All I do is spray clipper cool on them. Errrrrr!

Since its just random Poodle talk I'll post my current question here

Tuesday is a scardie cat, and will pee when nervous that I can deal with but she has started acting aggressive (barking and growling no lip just like one of those "oh crap stay away!" growl) when clients show up. I know its because she is insecure and afraid I just don't know how to correct it. If I correct her she pees so I don't want to go round and round with her. Gah...any suggestions?

How old is she?
Most females will outgrow 'submissive urination'.
Standard poodles sometimes have a tendency to be skittish.
Go out of your way to introduce her to strangers..let them give her a treat...even someone you don't know can be asked.
And ignore the 'pee'thing completely...it should go away as she grows more confident.

ha ha. Umm, so I just got my puppy's registration papers (finally!!) and on the breed it is just 'Poodle'.

I was curious if all poodles have that on their papers, or just miniatures? Or... if mine is wrong? lol. Anyways, if anyone knows that would be great!

Tuesday will be 2 in May. The people I got her from (well the husband) would spank her because they thought she was the one killing their geese. Turns out is was their other dog but Tues got in trouble for it so now when I have to grab her collar or get vocal with her she pees and when meeting new people she pees. Its gotten better though.

She is fine with the human clients but when I bring the dog in the yard she goes for it and gets defensive, I have worked with her on meeting new dogs, I just don't know what else to do.

Mine reads the same as well and I have Standard's. I know the Akc keeps the the variety do***ented but our registration just states Poodle.

If men are a really weak spot for her becuase of her past it might take a long time for her to come around. if she has been abused she probably learned that if she peed on herself the spanking stopped...therefore learning if she gave the most submissive acts she can immediately then maybe no spanking would come. You will have to just ignore the peeing until you can raise her confidence.

As far as I know our 2 yr old spoo was never hit, but I do know she had NO SOCIALIZATION around them...it has taken almost 6 months for her to even give my husband a play bow and it took at least 3 months for her to even ask to be petted by him. She is up my rear 24/7 and has never been shy around me after about her 3rd day here.

She still runs and hides under the kitchen table whenever anyone new comes in and she started growling at some people, especially men in hats.

Now when I have someone coming over, I lock the baby gate so she has to stay in the living room.When they knock and she starts barking and growling I put her in a crate (that she is fine with being in) right behind the couch they have to sit down on. She hears them, and I will walk over and just stick in a treat if she is quiet for about 2-3 minutes at a time. If she growls I just say NO sternly. My hope is to make her go to the crate by herself whenever someone knocks on the door, then stay in there with the door open without barking or growling.

In a perfect world I would like her to greet everyone nicely and sit to be petted like most of the others do, but for right now its about making her learn that she is safe even when she hears things she has deemed scary. Hopefully after that I plan to have new people simply drop a treat in front of the crate and if she comes out and takes it then that is great, that will be one more step toward getting her to be civil toward visitors.

I am not one to use a crate normally, but I even admit that in the case of a big dog like an adult spoo its better to crate her and work from there then to risk someone or another dog getting bit. If you don't want to use a crate then maybe start by putting her behind a baby gate where she can see new visitors but she feels safer because they are further away.

Just hang in there and be creative if you have to...just training her to bark on command and acting like she is just the SMARTEST DOG IN THE WORLD if she does something good will help. If she is that submissive I think anything boosting her ego might help.

On another note, females coming into season (even if its weeks or a month away) can act a bit off...that might be something to consider!

I took her with me to TSC the other day and she peed when she met the woman who worked there but when this Mexican man came over she just leaned over on him! I was surprised to say the least. She has pretty much stopped the peeing around the house if someone gets loud and when she does its just a tiny spot. What I though was odd was I groomed the dog she used to live with and as soon as she saw her, her ears went back and she peed. I hope she will grow out of it as she is just a teenager right now. I just worry!
