I wonder if I might be able to find a cheaper option in NYC proper (as opposed to the county where I live, which has a very high per capita income--might be one reason vets feel they can charge an arm and a leg!).

Good to hear from someone in Nashville. I think that will remain a serious option, especially with the holidays approaching. Killing two birds with one stone (or two nuts, as the case may be).

Wow, I was going to ask if you lived in California! They charge out the wahzoo over there for vet services in some parts. I guess NYC shouldn't be a surprise for high costs either. I believe ours averages aroung $300 including pre anasthesia blood testing. It sounds like your doggie doesn't have *much* of a marking problem so maybe it will go away. Usually once a dog starts marking tho it doesn't stop after neutering. I have had dogs that were neutered before they started marking to start marking later in life depending on their personalities, and others who never were neutered who never marked. So hope for the best!
Spaying and Neutering in CA is cheap to free. If a vet is charging like 500 plus it is most likely up scale vet clinic. You can get Vouchers from the shelters and used them at certain vet clinic and the spay or neuter will be free. Also there are TONS of free spay and neuter organizations to help people out.

In CA we now have mandatory spay and neuter so they are making it so easy for people to get their animals spayed and neutered.

Jenn I thought Eli was neutered all of this time lol

I was in shock today when I learned that having my Teddy neutered will cost me $525. When I had my cat done about five years ago, I think I paid around $125. Have things changed that much in that length of time? Talk about inflation!

Teddy has been marking a lot (thankfully only outside and at Petco), but he's recently started humping the poor cat. Two more weeks and I'll make the appointment. I'll have to save up some money!
Thats very over priced. Call around and get some more quotes before commiting to that. $525.00 geez! lol

I paid $90.00 for Eli. He's a 52 lb standard poodle. Where I took him is a low cost spay vet hosp but the care for normal rutine visits has been good in the past.

Nope! lol I had been putting it off for a long time now. At first I was going to try and do agility training with him but because he's such a mellow boy the trainer mentioned having him nuetered may really mellow him out. I dont know if Ill ever get aroung to doing agility these days (2 small kids and a newborn to be here soon) but if I do, he loves to perform for me. I'd rather have a male dog I can live with vs a male dog that drives me nutts.

Plus my poor Lotus was getting nailed by him over the last few weeks. She's a pit bull that will do nothing but let it happen too. Even my husband was getting sick of catching him in action. Dont worry everyone, my female dogs are both spayed! :)

Anyhow, we picked up Eli this morning and he is doing very well.
