EEEWWWWW!!! Fleas!

I just found a flea (just one) on Sam. He is 6 years old and he has never been on a flea preventative and has never gotten fleas. The vet has always recommended one but we just don't have a flea problem around here. Well we had someone new move in next door and her dog had fleas! So I've been keeping a close watch on Sam. I will go today and get something to bathe him in and I'll have to call the vet tomorrow to get a preventative (she's not open today). What kind of preventative do your poodles take? Do you think I need to fog the house or anything? Haven't seen any, but....? I will wash his beds and vacuum everything really good today. We have carpet in our bedrooms and hardwood or tile everywhere else. EEEWWWW, now I'm all itchy!

Oh how I LOATHE fleas, my dogs get them from the grass here and
other dogs...how it makes me mad! When I bathe my dogs I use
Adam's Flea and Tick Shampoo, and then when their all dry I use
Adam's Flea and Tick Spray (strong scent, lol!) on them, it's kind
of expensive (well, to me it is...) but it is well worth it if it helps
my pups. I just invested in a flea comb for my grooming kit
yesterday, hopefully it will help me out after the fleas are immobile
or dead in the dogs hair after being bathed or sprayed.

I've also used front line on mine to prevent fleas getting on them.

Living in the south I battle fleas all year round but as a preventive I use Diatamatious Earth. When I can buy a box load I use the Hartz brand topical drops from Wal-Mart.

You will need to wash your dogs bedding and dog every ten days to help get rid of any fleas that one flea had spawned. Here is a site that has some good flea information.

Yup Yup, make sure to wash the dogs bedding (forgot about that!)
...I feel for you if you have carpet all in your home like I do, it's
like a breeding ground for those little buggers!

Hi Purple Poodle, Am fairly new to this forum, signed up a couple of months ago & have sorta' been a silent reader, except for replying to a couple of Jenn Secreto's posts. Jenn & I own full "BRO" litter mates, Eli & Rocky, who are both "FAB" boys. Anyway, just wanted to know how you use D.E. as a flea preventative for your dogs? Do you only use it on the ground or do you apply it on them also? We use D.E. in our pool filter and always have some around. Thanx for any info. you may have.

The only type of D.E. you can use on animals in the food grade and you can get it from feed suppliers. The kind used in pools is harmful to animals. I use it as a de-wormer and mix it in their food about once a month. Then on the dogs/cats them selves to keep the fleas away and I dust the yard with it as well. It also keep snakes away

I got a hold of a vet today and put some Frontline on him, she said since I could only find one and no evidence of others then that should take care of it. I hate putting that stuff on him, but I hate fleas more. It's suppose to be good for 3 months, by then everything will be frozen here, so I shouldn't have to worry till next spring. I'll have to decide whether to put him on a once a month tablet or try to treat the yard and hope for the best. I don't like putting insecticide on the lawn either though. He looks so pathetic, I haven't let him come back in the house yet. I know, bad mom. It's nice out today so he'll just have to deal till after the kids go to bed. I don't want them getting their hands in that stuff.

I won't use Hartz brand stuff my sisters cat almost died from the topical treatment and I met a lady today whose cat did die from it. It caused major neurologic problems.

If there was only one, you havnt got a nest problem. Any liquidators you use is only good till they have a bath really. At most it would last 3 weeks to a month. Although they say they work for a long time, its never really the case.

we use k9 advantix once a month because we also have a lot of ticks here. We use a pill for the heartworm which is also prevalant here. The dogs have never had either problem but years ago my dog had fleas and we got infested - euuuu! I hated it - that's why I am glad they have the preventative stuff.

There has been some reports of people animals having a bad reaction to Hartz but that can happen with any brand of medication. Did your sister use the one made for cats? I have used it for years on many dogs and have never had an issue. I have only used it once on the outside cats.

I realize bad reactions can happen with any product like that, but when you see it first hand its a little harder to get past it. Yes, she used the proper kind.

When I was little, I grew up in the country down in south west Florida. It's hot there, and fleas are a major problem. I was allowed to adopt stray cats, and had a few outside kitty friends. Fleas were a serious SERIOUS issue, however we went to the vet and got Advantage, drops that went on the back of their necks. It was a miracle cure. Not one flea on them, ever, unless we were late in re-application (one vial per month.)
