Dewclaw Growing Back?

1287 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Eclipse
Peggy's dewclaws were removed by the breeder's vet, and I just noticed one is growing back! I didn't even know that was possible.

Anyone else have this happen with their poodle? Did you get it removed again?

Peggy's not yet been spayed, so it could be done while she's under for that surgery. I don't especially care either way, but I don't want it to cause any problems for her later on.

It's easier and less painfully removed as a wee puppy than an adult dog, just trim is I have had two poodles that their at least one of their dew claws grew back. I just trim them

Thanks, Twyla! It's actually quite cute. 😂

I've heard of this happening, but they don't usually grow back normally and can cause issues because of it. I'd let the vet decide when they do the spay.

Another thing though, you should tell her groomer because if the groomer doesn't realize it they can easily catch it in the clipper.

Snarky had one dew claw. It was no trouble up until the day he broke it falling down the stairs while doing zoomies. He was a bit of a klutz.

It is not unheard of that a dew will grow back if it was not completely removed. Many breeders do their own docking/dew removal and some have the vet do it. It's possible if the vet was doing the entire litter that he/she missed one or didn't get it all the way out. Years ago when I worked for a breeder and assisted at tail docking/dew removal we always tried to double-check that they were clean, but it can happen. If you have not yet spayed, I would have the vet remove the dew growing back at that time..
