Points are awarded to 1 dog in each gender. If you dog went best of opposite then she also HAD to go winners bitch. This means that she won the open class, she then went in and competed with all the other bitch class winners and was awarded winners bitch. In other words the judge narrowed down the girl by choosing ONE out of each class (you won the open class) then he chooses the best girl out of those winners (you won winners bitch) to go on to compete for best of variety. Sooo the point are awarded to winners dog and winners bitch. Now those two dogs go in and compete with the specials (dog's who are already champions) for best of variety. Your dog got best of opposite which is like second place. Another way to think of that is the judge picks one dog and one bitch that are the best in his opinion. If the dog is BOV then it's the bitch that wins BOS. Make sense?

As for getting points for going BOV, yes that is possible. It has to do with the number of specials that were girls though, they get added to the number of class bitches you beat to get to compete for BOV.
Also is you happen to go best of winners and there were points in the dog classes, and they were higher than the points in the bitch class then you get those instead of your bitch class win. So if there are two points in bitches and four points in dogs and you go best of winners (meaning you beat winners dog in the BOV competeition) then you get his points - so you've gotten yourself a four point major instead of just the two points.
