CBD Oil

Has anyone tried CBD oil or something similar such as Nutri Vet, ThunderEase, or any herbs/edible treats to calm your dog?

My standard poodle has severe anxiety around people he does not know. Whenever I take him out in public he is constantly afraid of people, noises, and will tuck his tail and bark/growl at them. These products are expensive so I wanted to see if anyone has any experience trying them with your dogs and if it worked.

I haven’t tried on my Poodle yet, but I’ve been using it on my cat for about three months now for anxiety and aggression and it’s done wonders for him. A lot of people swear by it. We use the Pet Releaf brand. Not the same, I know, but I have zero reservations about it’s legitimate effectiveness.

I haven't tried any of these preparations so I can't speak to their efficacy.

Have you tried desensitization? It's effective but it does take some training time. Find a place where you and your dog can go where strangers are coming and going - outside a mall or the park. Stand or sit with your dog far enough away that your dog is not barking/growling and tail is not tucked - IOW far enough back that your dog is comfortable and will take treats. Praise your dog, feed treats and play tug with your dog. Slowly move a foot closer and repeat treats/praise and/or play tug. Again when your dog is comfortable, move a little closer. This could take awhile, but over time your dog will become desensitized. This does require patience on your part and you can't be in middle of the process drag your dog off to where he will be close to strangers because you'll set the process back to square one.

I do use CBD oil currently for thunder storms (used to use Rescue Remedy) with good outcomes. I do not use it as a daily remedy, but I do know a person with a very anxious German short haired pointer who does so with good results.

Honestly much of the behavior you describe sound like outcomes resulting from a lack of sufficient or good enough quality of puppy socialization.

As Skylar mentioned the main thing to work on is counter conditioning your dog's worries about the things that make him anxious. You may want to think about using rescue remedy or CBD oil for helping him to relax as you start the training so you can keep him thinking and not worrying, but I wouldn't just give it forever with something that there is a way to more permanently fix with training. I am sure you can find lots of information about counter conditioning here and on other sites so I won't explain it here, but ask about it if there is anything about how to do it that doesn't make sense.

I currently use a product from Hempworks that is formulated for dogs. CBD 250 for dogs. I have 2 chihuahuas who were getting buggy about storms. My oldest would hide under the bed & tremble uncontrollably. So we give her a few drops & while it does help her manage things. Our youngest chi we used it to train her past the fear & now she doesn't need it. I'd give her 2-3 drops & once she saw that nothing bad would happen to her, she now just lays on us & no longer pants & trembles. If she starts to get bothered, I can give her a little but we've just come through two nights of horrible storms, including a tornado overhead & she didn't need it. It's bacon flavored & they seem to really like it. No difficulty giving it.
