Wanted to get a weigh in here...

Breeder said I can take the puppy at 7 weeks because the momma wants nothing to do with the pups anymore. I went home empty handed because I wanted to research a bit...

Should I take her home now or wait until 8 weeks?

I took my other dog Sam (this was 8 years ago...he is a lab) at 7 weeks.

THanks for your help!

Oh this is a standard poodle by the way.

Yes, I have never had a litter but I do know that the mother weans the puppies before seven weeks. It sounds like the breeder doesn't know this. My breeder won't let her puppies go until 10-12 weeks. Seven weeks is too early. They can't get the benefit of Parvo shots until they are eight weeks - or at least some of the puppies can't.

Also, they are still learning about bite inhibition at this age, and important social cues from their litter mates. No reputable breeder would let a pup go before 8 weeks, many keep til 9.

Years ago pups were homed at 6 weeks, as soon as they were weaned. Then 8 weeks became the norm, when it was recognised that they benefit from more time interacting with mum and the rest of the litter. Now we are more aware of infection risks, and balancing them with socialisation needs. If the breeder is actively socialising the pups, it's now considered best to leave them together up to 10 or 12 weeks, especially for small, toy breeds. How does the breeder measure up otherwise?

I would not but this puppy from this breeder. If she is encouraging you to take the pup home at 7 weeks, I shudder to think what else she is doing wrong. Are the puppies' parents fully health tested (not just an "all clear" from the vet, but the actually testing required for standard poodles)? How has she been socializing them? What has the breeder done to prove the structure and temperament of her stock (dog shows, performance events, CGC?)?
