If it was known to be genetic then we would have a genetic test for this disease FYI..
It is thought to be genetic but environment can definately come in to play.. If the dog is constantly confined to a kennel run as it is growing perhaps the muscles in the stomach do not develop right ? Most of the setters that I knew that bloated were crated alot ... We give enzymes and feed raw and kibble at different time of the day of course . WE try very hard to prevent .. Our dogs have the run of three acres..

Genetics may play some role but my lab has bloated twice and none of his 10 littermates have I definitely know his mom and grandfather didn't..not sure about his dad's side of the family..so it is definitely not all genetics

Ive never heard that it was genetic, i think its all about environment and the make up of the dog. Deep chested dogs are more prone to bloat.
