Yesterday Mum got all stressed and cross in the afternoon - we wanted to go for a walk but she said we couldn't because the car wasn't working, although it looked just the same to us. And this morning she was all busy-busy-boring on the phone, and just when we should have been going down by the river to meet all our friends a man came in a big van and took the car away! We told Mum it was being stolen, but she wouldn't listen. And then our lovely friend David came and said he would drive us out for a walk, and the window cleaner arrived at the same moment, and it all got a bit noisy for a while, but David took Mum and us for a lovely long walk at the shore, and when we came home Mum was feeling a bit sleepy from all the excitement so we went and had a snuggle and a zizz till it was time for supper and then David took us all for another walk by the river, but it was in a different car so it all got very confusing.

We like David lots but we think Mum should make the man in the van bring our own car back, because it smells right and goes to the right places at the right times and everything is comfortable and normal. Mum says it will be days and days and days before our car is mended because it has lost all its oomph, and tomorrow we may have to try and go for a walk by bus, which will be an adventure, but we think we have had quite enough adventures for the time being!

Oh, Poppy, I am sorry you had to go in the wrong car. I wouldn't like that very much either. I hope the car gets fixed quicker than quick. You need to go to the right places the right way.

Dear Poppy,

I know what you mean about strange cars. We have one called a “loner”. They took the male’s car and left the strange car where the human’s cars aren’t usually parked. I don’t like it and had to bark when I saw it. It can stay by its lonesome and leave as soon as possible. I hope your car comes back soon, too.

Dear Poppy,

Don't ya hate it when your humans get weird? My house mate, a Giant Schnauzer told me our humans used to have blue buggy (Mom calls it a little SUV... whatever that is). It was great, she could lay down in the back & have all kinds of room for her friends. Now we have car. I rode home with our humans in car & it doesn't have all kinds of room for me much less for the Giant, the Collie & the two tiny dogs. Honestly, humans can be sooooo silly. Where did blue buggy go? Then they show up with blue truck. Blue truck is not so bad. It has a big back seat & I like to sniff the wind & my ears flop in the wind so maybe this is what blue buggy grew up to be. Maybe blue buggy was only a baby? I dunno. I hope your car comes back soon so you can be comfortable again & go all the right places again.

Hang in there,
~Mr. Layne

PS.... maybe you have to teach this strange car where to go & what to do like a puppy?

I got so worried my tummy got upset in the night, and Mum wouldn't wake up when I groaned at her so in the end I had to make little tiny barks to wake her up to let me out and round about the third or fourth time she started getting really grumpy, and it was pouring with rain and I wanted Mum to come with me with a torch so I felt safe and that seemed to make her even grumpier. She did cuddle me warm and dry under the duvet, though, so I forgave her, although she was very, very late waking up to give us breakfast this morning - I had special poorly tummy food and it was lovely!

Mum says she thinks the car's clutch has gone, but she doesn't seem to know where. My Mum is always losing things. I think she should look for it, instead of letting people take the car away too!

Ooooh! Oooooh! Mum was on the phone and got all excited and then a nice man brought our car back! So Mum was wrong that it would take days and days more, and everything is nearly back to normal. Mum says we just have to wait for the man from Tesco's to deliver the groceries she ordered when she thought she would not be able to go shopping for a week and then we can go for a proper walk in our own car, just as we usually do.

I like things to be usual, and not all upset and strange and uncomfortable!

[Hurrah for helpful local garages, and people who cancel at the last minute, leaving slots for emergency clutch replacements! fjm]

I do love the Poppy stories. The dog's eye view point is so well done.

Well, there was once a small collection of Tilly letters that came in handy when I needed to complete a creative writing assignment in a hurry. The other students seemed a bit bemused, though!

There will be more - Poppy will make sure of that! She is already getting to wonder why the cats get special food and she doesn't - or at least, only when she has an upset tum.

I am so sorry to hear about your weird car events. I thought maybe we were the only ones who had car problems!

Last night I got to jump in the jeep and go pick up this guy that is my favorite person (except mom of course). He is a friend of mom's. She always picks him up because he has something she calls allshymurs and she gets upset when he goes to the wrong place on the wrong day.

Well, I like him because I got to stay with him when she went to Ecuador and the vet didn't give me shots on time. I am really pissed because if I wasn't going to get to go I shouldn't have had to have those horrible shots that hurt and made me feel yucky.

I taught his cat how to sleep in bed with him! Silly cat only went up there because I was there and then it hissed at me. But the man laughed and I refused to get down, so the cat decided he would just have to quit hissing and get up there with us! So now I got to go home with my mom and the cat sleeps there all the time!

The cat did NOT get to come to my house because my mom is allergic to cats.

Oh, I forgot this was about cars. So my mom is driving that guy to the movies so we could all see 'The Art of Racing in the Rain'. But the car kept going slower and slower so my mom quickly pulled into a business parking lot. It wouldn't go any farther! So two other guys and my friend had to push it away from the entrance.

They were all laughing at my mom which wasn't very nice. They said only 16 year old girls were supposed to use the excuse of running out of something called gas when they were with a guy. She was very embarrassed. Those guys had a can of really smelly stuff they put in a hole in the car, and then it started, and she had to give them money!

The movie was ok, but I like movies about poodles better.

Dear Poppy,

Good news! That strange car finally left today and my favorite ride returned. Funny, though, the male was vibrating with anger, something, something not fixed. Why can’t he be happy like me? Humans stress me out for all the wrong reasons. The car came back. Calm down!

Hurray, everyone's proper cars are coming back! And Mum says today the sun is going to shine, after days and days of rain, so we can go for a proper walk, and do Nice Things for Dogs.

But I don't think it is a good idea to encourage cats to sleep on the bed - ours do it without any encouragement, especially when they are all wet, and it can get very crowded. And they always want the best spots, behind Mum's knees or up by the pillow.

My Mum says she knows about the smelly stuff for cars, and has come very close to being embarrassed like that because when her car tells her it still has lots left it suddenly changes its mind and doesn't. But now she knows it doesn't tell the truth she makes sure to feed it in time, although there was one time in an old car that it all drained away in the night and took her by surprise.

My tummy is still a bit nervous, though - I Don't Like Changes.
