Help - Clipper advice and troubleshooting please???

My spoo puppy is 7 months old, and I was so happy because grooming has been so easy - but now I think I broke my clippers.

My mother gave me her 20 year old Oster A5 golden clippers, bladewash, oil, and blades : 15, 2x 3f, 2x 7f, and some cheap scissors. She also gave me a tiny cheap mini trimmer with probably a 40 blade. I also bought a set of metal clipper combs, grooming arm, comb, slicker and pin brush.

I took the 15 blade apart to clean it, put it back together, then played with the tension because it was pulling when I turned it on. After 5 min of fiddling, my clippers are now not holding speed - they go full speed, then slow/stop, then full speed, then slow/stop, etc. I tried using a different blade. Same issue. Deep breaths...

Any suggestions for parts to replace? Things to clean/change? Really good troubleshooting guides?

I was planning on buying a Bravura for her FFT on the recommendation of the breeder, and order a few new blades for my Oster. My clippers are LOUD and my puppy hates having the sides of her face near her ears shaved. She's completely fine with me using the mini trimmer, but it cuts too close, skips terribly and looks patchy. She's also a lot less wiggly if I use the trimmer on her feet.

Should i take the budget for the Bravura and invest in a new clipper, or is there anything else I can try? Any recommendations for quiet corded clippers? I feel like my grooming wish list is expanding every day - HV dryer, decent shears, dremel...

I can only say consider getting your A5 refurbished. I did this with my old A5 and the difference was amazing - well worth the price - they will also sharpen blades if you need that service.

Fill in the order questionnaire and Oster will get back to you https://www.osteranimalcare.com/cust...?cid=contactus

I found them very responsive and this is the best way to get in touch. Oh, found two phone #'s you can also use to contact -Oster Direct 800-830-3678
Jarden consumer Solutions Oster Professional Products 888-865-6810.

BTW, for FFT I have an Arco SE. But Asta prefers the A5 with a 10 blade so that's what I am using now.

I've contacted them using the web form, thank you for the suggestion - you mean let someone else who knows what they are doing take a look at it, fix it and anything else that's wrong, and send it back working hopefully better (and quieter!) than ever? Sounds great - and much less stressful - to me :) I find it really encouraging that Asta doesn't mind your A5s near his ears... i would love not having to buy another clipper.

I dropped my Oster A5 and discovered I could send it in and had it refurbished and outer case replaced for $65, well worth the cost!! I also bought a Bravura for FFT because Raven did not tolerate the Oster around her face too well. I think she would be OK now but it also lighter to hold so worth having both tools.

My refurbishment was $55.00 - maybe Raven's was more cause they had to replace the case. Sent in ALL my blades to be sharpened, think that was about $7.00 each, much cheaper than the local sharpening place. When all the stuff came back it was like having a new clipper with blades that just run through his coat with no snags what so ever. The A5 is a real workhorse and I am so glad I went this route, rather than buying a new clipper.

If you don't hear back for a couple of days on the email question, I would not hesitate to call the 800 numbers. As I remember it was Jarden that actually did the work.
