I need help and I'm sure someone here might have some direction or answers for me.
I was given a gift of a rescued, a 5 year-old male Toy Poodle about 6 weeks ago. He is the most loving well behaved adorable dog one could ask for. And he is a handsome champion looking stud too. Guido came from the Humane Society and was neutered the day before he came home with me. Among other things he had kennel cough and a bladder infection so bad there was blood in his urine.
With a rescue you don't have a history and don't know anything about their health. The Vet guessed his age was 5, I thought he was more like 2.
The problem is night incontinence. I noticed that he pees in his sleep and wets the bed. I placed a plastic sheet down on the bed then a flat white sheet over it and bunch up a fitted sheet for his comfort to nestle into. Then in the morning when I wake up there is a pee spot underneath him.
Yesterday when I took his urine sample to the Vet they confirmed that his bladder infection was gone and the Vet suggested that the incontinence was more of a behavioral problem. I don't buy that. They told me to get doggie dippers.
At first he drank lots and lots of water. But, it was the bladder infection and the antibiotics causing him to do that. His water intake is normal now. I have trained many dogs in the past and know its all about us and the routine we give the dogs as to why they will 'go' in the house. Guido goes for walks all day and evening that isn't the issue. I make it a habit to walk him anywhere from 1/4 of a mile to a mile at night before bed. And he's all pee'd out by the time he gets home and his little bladder is empty. So I don't think its that.
I did a little research and I have learned that sometimes when small male dog has been neutered they become incontinent at night. When I went to my local mom-and-pop pet store the guy told me they sell something to stop night incontinence and it will help build the badder muscles and it will eventually stop.
Does anyone know what I can do?
Any ideas what else this might be?
