Default What do you/your vet suggest...

...For a sufficient amount of time to wait after the last set of puppy shots in order to be fully protected. Oreo's vet said to wait two weeks after the last shots....I read that some vets say 10 days and some even say the dogs are fully protected after the second shot. One article said that even with shots something like 29% of dogs still get parvovirus.

Parvovirus is prevelant here in the warm year round climate. I really want to start socializing Oreo ASAP but am concerned with him being exposed to illnesses at too young of an age. He is 16 1/2 weeks now. I am neurotic...I don't want my baby to miss out yet I want him to be healthy.

Remy started puppy class at 15 weeks. At my vet's recombination, I started taking him to pet stores, Lowe's and Home Depot when he was 12 weeks old, because he had a temper tantrum at 9 1/2 weeks at vet the day after I brought him home, and then then at 11 1/2 weeks he tried to bite the vet and had to be muzzled. I would take hime anywhere they would allows pets, he would ride in the shopping cart and people would pet him etc. The vet felt that the benefits would outweigh the risk.

We had one more incident of him trying to bite some at around 13 weeks, but that was the last time. Between all the outings, going to the vet every two to three weeks because we didn't want to double up on shots, and puppy class -- he has become a very sweet little guy. He is a behavior success story as far as the vet is concerned and I think the exposure to all the different places and people early on really helped. He is 6 1/2 months now and we still have things to work on - but he has come a long way.

Thank you plr. Remy is adorable. I took Oreo to the dump today. I didn't let him out of the truck but he loved all the stinky smells.

I followed my vet's advice about the importance of early socialization trumping overblown concerns about infections diseases. I am in NO WAY dismissing the notion that reasonable precautions should be taken. I took Chagall around as a pup in carrier or held him in my arms after he completed his second puppy shots. So many dogs are turned into shelters (or worse!) due to behavior problems, early socialization seems key to ensuring a dog can live well and happily. Note this, "The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior Position Statement on Puppy Socialization advises that socialization in the first three months of life, before puppies are fully vaccinated, should be the standard of care."

Some good info here, I think.

I carried tricky in my jacket to Opie's dog classes from the first week I fetched her home so she could get used to seeing other dogs. She started her own classes at eleven and a half weeks old, ten days after her second jabs. I decided socialization was more important than the low risk of catching parcel.
