I have a 12 week old puppy. His name is Beau. I bought a brush to brush him with, but it doesn't seem to do it. Is this because of the kind of coat he has? I bought Johnson's baby shampoo with no tangles with condition on the recommedatio of a friend, hoping to help, but it didn't. Does anyone out their have any suggestion? Thanks Debby
I used a slicka on Inca from being 9 weeks old. You have to be careful with them but it seemed to be the only thing that would go through her incredibly thick puppy coat. Take little patches of hair at a time and go slowly, preferably in a line, just to make sure that you go all the way down to the skin on every part of the body. When their coat starts to change (about 8 months onwards) you need to look out for little knots. They often appear overnight and can be found anywhere on the body but are common behind the ears, under the arm pits, at the bottom of the legs (where we often forget to brush) and in particular on the side on which they lie or where harnesses and/or clothing come in contact with their hair. I wouldn't use human shampoo and conditioner on a puppy. There are lots of good dog shampoos out there that are suitably balanced for dog hair.
THanks for the information. I will search for an that at petsmart tonight after her training class. The baby shampoo made her smell so sweet. Do the dog shampoos smell good? Debby
Dog shampoos aren't really made with a lot of scent, it's best to just buy a good graded one that's best for both their skin and coat. Though often in the same area that you see the shampoos, you'll find coat conditioning sprays or dog cologne, those will have scents.
You should also get a pin brush without the bobbles at the end of each tooth, as well as a metal wire comb and a soft puppy slicker brush.
You might have a hard time finding a pin brush with no balls at the end. All the ones I saw had balls. I ended up buying a CC brush, they are expensive but I like mine.
Are pin brush with no balls easy to find in the state?
use a dog shampoo and conditioner... I have heard that baby shampoo, though tearless is harsh and can strip the oils from a dogs coat (something about cradle cap or something)
before you wash him make sure you can run the comb through all his hair, washing will just make matts or tangles worse, comb him as he is drying and dont wash him more than once every 2 weeks or so (so you don't dry his skin out and make him itchy)
