I am a new poodle puppy owner. Well shes 4 months now. I have other breeds of dogs dachsand and golden retriever but never a poodle. I was wondering for her first year i wanted her coat to remain the same style as it is in the photos on my profile. Can somebody suggest what i should ask for when I take her to get groomed?

Also I just wanted to make sure that she is the apricot color right? Also my fiances poodle was this color and now she is white. Will this happen to my Penny-Penelope?

Thank-You

I would worry that every groomer's version of the puppy clip would be different. I would just add how long you want her face to be and how to cut the ears (if at all). Some people call it a teddy bear clip, but there are a lot of interpretations on that style too.

I guess I'm trying to say that you need to talk to the groomer and be specific about how to trim each part of her. If they don't get it right, no worries. Hair grows back. It's really more important she has a positive experience getting groomed.

Katey96, Your little Penny-Penelope is a real cutie. We have a toy poodle which was this color (cream) / (apricot) when she was born. Infact she was dark enough that she was named Ginger to go with her color, probably the same reason your girl was named Penny. Ginger has been lightening up all along and is almost white now, with just a little tinge of cream on her ears now. She is now 16 mo. old. I have seen some stay the cream color, some lighten up and have also seen some that got darker. I guess only time will tell, but I know that you will love her no matter what her color ends up. Poodles are sooooo special. BTW, welcome to the Poodle Forum, I'm sure that you will enjoy it here.

I agree with BF. I think you should ask for a "teddy bear" or "Bichon" clip. It is not usual for poodles to be trimmed this way so make sure that you are clear with your groomer. Take in lots of pictures as examples.

Be very careful that you always keep it trimmed around the eyes. It is important that poodles not have their vision impaired because it can lead to behavioral problems. I just want to scream when I see those Doodles with their eyes totally covered.

Also, with a light colored dog and a long hairy face, you may find that you get food staining around the mouth. People say to wash with vinegar et al but I don't think there is a cure for a stinky beard other than shaving the face.

Finally, you poodle is quite light. It is hard to tell in the picture, but I might almost call that color cream not apricot. It would be helpful to see a pedigree with colors to know what colors are behind.

Do you suggest a independant groomer or one in a franchise like petsmart? What has been you experience with them? Also her mama was the apricot color and I was told that the black poodle I saw was her papi. So I don't know how this one is going to work out! I am intrigued though.

I would go with an independent groomer, as petsmart and petco groomers for the most part aren't trained to do poodle or bichon kind of cuts. I would interview a few groomers, ask them to come and see a poodle after it's been groomed. Also, if you see a person with a poodle who's cut you like, ask who the groomer is. Word of mouth is a great way to find a groomer.

Good luck,

I can't speak for groomers at petco but a goof 60% of my bussiness while I was at petsmart were standard poodles and hand scissored bichons. I think it varies perhaps from store to store on how well a groomer is trained. They conduct training in "teaching stores" and like everything else it's the luck of the draw sometimes as to wether or not you get a good instructor. It also depends too on who works in the salon and what their previous experience might have been. Growing up around show dogs gave me an advantage over some of the other groomers in the salon at petsmart. They had never seen some breeds or some trims.

You best bet is to take pictures with you no matter where you go. Don't ever ask for anything in general terms, never ever ask for a "puppy trim" or a "summer clip". Be specific on how long you would like the coat left and use the photos to illistrate what style you'd like. Being specific is really key. :)
